have posted before re DDs lack of speech.

she is now almost 2.4, not really forming sentences, and i am her interpreter/ transalator.. even DH finds it hard to understand her. She speaks her own little language but understands everything..

she is not really making any progress, and the small amount she has made has been very slow.

HV has referred her for SALT, this was in August, am still waiting , she reckoned i would hear by Xmas about an appt.

DH is thinking she might have verbal dyspraxia, and wants a referral privately to pead. and / or SALT.

so , is it worth going privately? or is she normal but a little slow?

thanks very much boo

it does help to know that other parents have had the same concern and it has turned out alright. she has said a couple of new words this week. but she is still talking in her own language, and there are bits i don;t understand! she says the same unintelligeble phrases again and again with the same inflection, so they obviously mean something to her..

thanks for the links scottishmummy

Lulu - that's kind of what my ds was doing a lot of - he was definitely consistently using the same sounds for specific things but they were quite garbled and he just couldn't produce a number of consonant sounds, missed off endings and kind of slurred sounds. An example - his friend Alex was just 'yaya'.

I knew what he meant quite often but I'm sure other people just thought I was crazy and it sounded so garbled.

Ds did start this improvement by suddenly saying a lot of new words so fingers crossed for you.

update

took DD to teh Doc's this morning.. doc very sympathetic and listened to all my concerns.. she did feel that it was a bit too early to refer privately as although she has some indications of a speech delay and immature speech, she is 2.4 and some of her speech falls withing normal parameters.

we have agreed i will take her back in the New Year, when she is 2.6 and take it from there and she said she is happy to refer her then if no improvement.

am happy with that for now, as now my doc and m HV have seen her and are not desperately worried, so i feel better.

will keep an eye on things and see what happens.

Have you changed your name Lulu or is that someone else?

Where is dd at now with talking - how many words at once that kind of thing?

Camillathechicken · 23/11/2007 14:40

sorry, yes , it is me !

she has got a couple more single words , but no sentences/ conversation to speak of

RubySlippers · 23/11/2007 14:43

why are you being a muppet lulu

so, do you feel reassured enought to wait until the new year - i am glad your doc was sympathetic

Camillathechicken · 23/11/2007 14:53

am happy to wait, DH less so.

Good that GP took you seriously. Phone up your local NHS SALT dept to check how long the waiting list is when considering whether to go private.
