Does it matter if a baby is above centitles if it's reasonably consistent?

Assuming I've done my measurements correctly, DS who was on the 98th/99.6th centiles for everything at birth, now isn't even on the chart for his height, is it only a concern if it's alarmingly over rather than by 2cm?

If he's in proportion I wouldn't worry at this stage, especially if either of you are tall.

@BunnyRuddington we re both quite short but have tall men in our families, he's reasonably in proportion

I wouldn't he concerned at all, it's not like you can do anything about it! In my experience at some point in their childhood they even out to where they are meant to be, wherever that is.
I was a realllly tall child, everyone went on to my mum (who isn't tiny!). I evened out at just about average in my teens.

I was just thinking maybe he has a lot of growth hormones but you re right nothing we can do about it. He's almost out of his infant car seat, tall chunky babies are pricey.

How old is he? I wouldn’t worry, some people are tall. If he was a 4ft 2 year old then, yes maybe something to think about but above the line isn’t a big deal- it’s just showing a rough size a child of that age could be 🤷🏼‍♀️

Amanduh · 14/03/2021 18:26

My DS was 99th percentile for everything at birth. His head size and height now don’t even register on the chart he’s that tall/big headed. Have been to hospital a few times for allergy reasons, absolutely nothing wrong. He’s in proportion. Just turned 10 months and walking 😂 some babies are just big! As a pp said, they usually even out. @Sonnet18 that would have helped wouldnr it, he's 4.5 months :) about 2ft 5
@Amanduh I hope he might even out, some of his 9-12 months tops aren't fitting already

I wouldn’t even remotely worry about it for babies! Some babies are big and then turn into tiny little 3 year olds. Some are tiny babies and grow into big children. They tend to be all over the place percentile-wise as babies. Are you and his dad tall? My daughter was 50th percentile at that age. She’s now 98th percentile for height and way above her peers. My son was the opposite- big baby, slightly above average 3 year old.

1990shopefulftm · 14/03/2021 19:17

@Sonnet18 not remotely tall, we re 5 5, 5 6 but there's many tall men in the family

I guess that’s slightly more unusual...but not worrying. My nephew is so tall, by far the biggest in his class. His parents and sister are tiny (mum is 5’1, dad is 5’6) my sister in law has a very tall brother, we assume he gets it from there. I definitely wouldn’t worry, everyone loves a big tall boy!!

@Sonnet18 maybe I should be prepared that he isn't going to slow down with the clothes he goes through in that case

I think a bigger concern is if a child is rapidly crossing centiles in either direction. If he is just bobbing along up the top there then dont fret, hes just big now but doesnt really mean he will be forever, although he might be.
As long as he is eating normally and thriving in the normal way otherwise you should forget all about it, no doubt he is lovely
