8yo ds will only read wimpy kid novels - let him carry on ?

He has only been reading wimpy kid books for months now. Before that he would only read what the school gave him. He still does his school reading but he just won’t make a proper go of reading anything else. He is football mad and i said he could get new boots if he finished a boon that wasn’t WK. He still hasn’t done it. Is this just a long dull phase that I have to endure? He has loads of beautiful interesting books around at all levels and topics so no lack of varied material. Just want his creative writing to to be a bit more fluent and interesting and I. Relieve reading other stuff will help. I sometimes read to him at night but not every night.

I've found reading with my 8yo reluctant reader the best solution. We try and do a chapter every day, he reads a few pages, I read a few pages, back and forth.
