My DS will be 1 next month.
He has always absolutely hated every second of tummy time - I think because he has a very big, heavy head (99th percentile). As soon as he learnt to roll it was like an automatic reaction every time I put him on his tummy - he’d go straight onto his back.
He can sit up, but often hates that too (less clear why). He point blank refuses to sit on the floor or in the bath. He’ll sit on the sofa for a bit, but pretty much all he wants to do is stand (with my support - he hasn’t got the balance yet), and ‘walk’ ie I stand above him holding his hands whilst he stumbles in a vaguely forward direction putting one foot in front of the other! Crawling is obviously just not gonna happen as he hates being on the floor and absolutely will not be on his tummy for any length of time.
He is SO frustrated and angry at not being able to move, and I am exhausted by being continually shouted at all day and/or down on my hands and knees trying to keep him happy whilst also trying to entertain my 3 yo. He is v happy when we go for walks in the pram (thank god), but his default mood these days when we are at home is angry and frustrated. He just shouts ‘AHH!!’ or screams and cries to ear piercing volume unless I am constantly physically interacting with him.
Long winded intro but basically asking anyone out there who had / has a baby who went straight to walking without crawling - is this cranky behaviour normal? And also long did this phase last? Would be good to know if I’ve likely got months of this ahead or whether it sounds like he might walk soon (DD didn’t walk until 16 months but did crawl).
Finally is there anything I can do to help him get his balance whilst standing? He’s been v strong on his legs for weeks now but if I prop him against the coffee table for example it’s only a second or two before he loses balance.
Any ideas on what to do and/or how to navigate this phase would be really great.
Thank you :-)
