How do you get your child to dress themselves?!

My daughter is four and a half and perfectly capable of getting most items of clothing on or off and knows the order she should put things on. Needs some help with the obvious- buttons, bit of tucking in etc. However, getting her to actually DO it is another matter.

I've tried let's have a race, put one item on at a time and come and show me, who can get ready first etc. She just dithers. If I leave her I can go back fifteen minutes later and she'll be in a pair of pants and one sock rolling around on the floor looking for imaginary monkeys. If I stay in her room she still dithers and I loose my shit. She also does the whole 'I can't do it' etc, whereas if I'm not in the room she manages fine.

She's not started school so this isn't so much of an issue yet but I would like her to get herself dressed for school in September and not end up taking 45 minutes to do it... or do I just pick my battles and help her get dressed for school?

We use an egg timer, he has to be dressed before the timer goes off otherwise he can't use his iPad before school. Obviously now schools are closed so he has to do it to get a treat after breakfast, and it seems to work for us.
