Can't stop my toddler from sucking his fingers

Hi,
This has probably been covered several times but I am hoping for some fresh advice.

My 3 year old sucks his two middle fingers when he is tired/bored/sleeping/needs comforting. He has done it since he was 4months old.

When he is awake I remind him to stop and he mostly does but when he is sleeping or just about to fall asleep he won't stop. Does anyone have some top tips to breaking this habit permanently? I've seen finger gloves advertised but they are expensive- do they really work?

My DN started doing this and were advised to swap if for a dummy straightaway by a Dentist. The theory being that once they stop sucking the fingers and like the dummy instead, you can eventually throw the dummy away.

Thanks, what age was your DN when you saw a dentist, it makes sense but I'm not sure about introducing a dummy at age 3, I'll only have to wean him off of that afterwards.
