What time should an 8 year go to bed?

Not used Mumsnet before so here goes:

My eight year old goes to bed at 8pm and is allowed to read until 8.30pm. He then spends the next two hours calling us up stairs for various reasons - usually to tell us that he can't sleep. Have tried ignoring him but he stands at the top of the stairs and the bangs bannister etc. Perhaps we are sending him to bed too early but we need to have some evening time ourselves - I don't think we are being selfish. Any tips? Thanks.

I agree, it sounds like he's after some more one to one time and reading to him would be great. My mum read to us till I was about 11, I think! Also you could make it your chat time, just to sit on his bed and have a general chit chat about the day or whatever he has on his mind at that moment.

i agree with the change to routine, as well; i'd give the kids a sandwich and drink and fruit at when they come in from school, then dinner at 6ish. Hopefully a fuller tummy might aid the sleepiness - it's not as if they'd be immediately going to bed on a full tummy, it would have had about an hour to go down....

oh and welcome to mumsnet!
