Self-soothing our of window after illness

Hello, DS2 is almost 10 months.
He is usually a really happy thing, but has recently got over a nasty virus - ended up on IVs in hospital as refusing to drink, had a high temp and was very hoarse and snotty for a couple of days.
He is completely recovered now and eating and drinking well, but as we had to hold him a lot for naps and generally cuddles in hospital and at home while he was getting, he's become very used to being held again and is screaming the house down when I try to put him down for daytime naps. The last couple of nights he has been pretty much milk drunk and snoring in my arms before being put down - the slightest noise has woken him up again.
He was always good at self-soothing when he woke up in the night but I've had to get up with him three times overnight - he shares a room with DS1 (three years old) and has been waking him up too.
He's generally quite cranky if we walk away from him (eg to fetch something from another room) or if we take anything out of his hands etc.
Any ideas?

It might get better as his health improves. Is he fully better now?
