Food/saliva holding in mouth - anyone else had this?

DS has recentley started retaining food and saliva in his mouth for up to 40 mins. It seems to start as a kind of joke with a bit of biscuit but eventually he gets v upset and we have to virtually force the liquid from his mouth. Is this just an odd habit that will pass or could it be something more serious. Any advice from anyone who may have experienced something smiliar welcome. Ta (DS 2yr)

ds has always done this, esp with fizzy water or dissolving stuff like choc or cheese. seems an innocent pleasure to me. [cue 400 mners saying he'll never pass any exams and his toes will fall off]

Odd

Mine will hold food in their mouth if they don't want to swallow it and will chew it for ages until I make them spit it out! Or they will put loads in their mouth to the point they can't swallow it and have to spit it out. I don't get it as if they don't like it - why put it in your mouth where you can taste it but then not swallow it ?

Not saliva though!
