People who don’t believe babies can be manipulative

What’s going on with my 9 month old when he does this:

Baby sees I have food or maybe his milk, crawls toward me, half way there he puts his head down on the floor as if in despair and wails, looks up to make sure I’m watching him, if I don’t react and go “oh poor baby do you want some” and pick him up and give him some then he continues crawling, trying the despair look a couple more times along the way until he reaches me.

I'm not sure at 9 months, but definitely two of mine by 15/16 months would fall over and look to see if I was watching before crying. If I carefully looked away then they'd just continue getting up fine, if they saw that I was watching, then they'd cry. My third one would get up, walk over and deliberately fall down in front of me and then cry. Grin

I have a couple of very clear memories of being deliberately manipulative from when I was about 3yo.
