Can anyone tell me about school in The Netherlands

My DS is 3 and we are moving to Holland.

I have heard that formal learning doesn't start until 7? I believe he will
start school at 4 but doesn't have to until he is 5. Does anyone have experience with the Dutch system. Hmmwhat do they do with them all day ?
