Baby cries when other children make noise

DS is nearly 1 and the last few times I've had him out for lunch or softplay with other babies, he will start hysterically crying if they make any noise. He needs to be cuddled and reassured. Just back from lunch today with pal and 18 month old who was being quite noisy (but not inappropriately so) and DS was inconsolable. I couldn't leave him in his high chair as he was so upset and consequently he ate very little and I had to eat my food around him. Is this a phase? It seems as though the noises frighten him but he's quite happy making the noises himself.

We have a dog and he has gotten upset a couple of times if dog barks loudly (at window cleaner for example) but I'm starting to dread taking him anywhere with other kids. He has no issues with adults making noise 🤔

It could be that something has frightened him recently. I was going to suggest getting his ears checked for an ear infection but if he’s fine with adults making noises an infection seems unlikely.

I think you are doing the right thing in giving him reassurance.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe he is just a bit frightened but it just makes it so hard to socialise!
