Can't settle my hysterical 1 year old...

Hi all. My baby girl has been sick tonight. Don't know why - she had her jabs yesterday so maybe that I sorted the room and bathed her and put her back to bed. That was an hour ago and she is hysterical. Was fine in bath and when I put her down but since then it is hysteria. When I go up she wants a cuddle but once I put her up she is flailing and screaming more. I know it is because she is over tired but I can't stop her crying. Worried she will make herself sick again. I can't risk giving her more milk, she didn't want water and she gags at Calpol. Have tried walking her around, singing, sitting in the room, leaving her for 5- 10 mins at a time. We had this a month ago and she was up until midnight and then woke at 2 and awake until 4am!! I am on my own tonight - what can I do?? x

I wouldn’t leave her to cry, she obviously feels rotten and no child expert would recommend sleep training with a child that is poorly.

Have you tried giving her the calpol with a syringe? What she her temperature?

Aries456 · 21/02/2018 21:55

Hi, she doesn't really have a temperature. She feels a bit hot but think that is from the upset. I kept going back in every 5-10 mins and trying to sooth her. She eventually fell asleep whilst I waited outside her room.
If I give her Calpol in a syring she gags and is sick. I have never been able to give her any.
Just so horrible when I was trying to hold her and cuddle her and she was just arching and straining and screaming then settled for a few seconds then did it again. It was like she was fighting against me holding her but when I put her down she was just as bad. If I left her in her cot but stayed in the room she just stood at the cot crying at me.
So worried she will wake in the night and it happen again. She won't settle in my bed so co sleeping won't work. I normally feed her if she is very upset about anything but don't feel I can if she has been sick.

I think the current advice is to keep offering the milk, even if they are being sick.

If she wakes again, I’d take her temperature and if it’s raised I’d call 111.

Aries456 · 21/02/2018 22:13

Ah ok - thank you for that. Am sure she will settle quickly if she wakes as long as she has milk. God it is so stressful and horrible. And yes I have a digital thermometer. My son had terrible reaction to his 1 year jabs so I was advised to seek medical advice if she goes the same way. Phew. Ok. Milk, temp, call if needed. Thank you for taking time to respond Everyone, really appreciate it x

Hope she’s ok Thanks

How is she now @Aries456?

Aries456 · 23/02/2018 19:57

Hi! After she finally went down she woke twice in the early hours but I took your advice and gave her milk which she kept down :) last night she was a bit clingy when I put her down but I have her a few extra cuddles and she went off after about 20 mins. Tonight was similar. But no sign of fever and no more sickness (I have been giving her her dinner earlier just in case). Thank you so much for your help the other night - really appreciated it. Still got a few days for possible reaction to hit but fingers crossed we are gonna be ok! Xx

Oh that’s brilliant. Hopefully she’ll be fine now Smile

Update, she didn't sleep well last 2 nights bit no hysteria. Has been cranky as well and off her food. Today she has a temperature of 39.5 and is sleepy. Assuming it is still reaction to jabs. I have managed to smuggle Nurofen into her yoghurt as she vomits up and medicine immediately....

Has her temperature come down after having the Nurofen?
