16 month old suddenly wont go to sleep / bed. Help!!

My 16 month old son has always been a good sleeper but just last week he started crying when I laid him down in his cot and he got up and wanted cuddles. I thought it was a one off and he must be poorly cause he has got a cough and cold, but now it is every night he won’t go down and he cries when he wakes up in the night too.
He’ll only sleep if I cuddle him and then as soon as he wakes he cries again.
It’s driving me bonkers. So tired with being up all night and at my wits end I just don’t know what to do 😭😭😭😭😭 please someone help!!

DS went through this phase - it is just a phase! - at 17 months. It did pass quickly, but we had to be very reassuring and stay in his room, etc. I think it is just a sign of an increased awareness of being alone, darkness, their surroundings, and so on.
