End of my tether with 4 yr old

I'm literally at the end of my tether with my 4yr old, he's constantly stroppy. The smallest of things will set him off, for example yest we had been to a party and when we got home wanted one of the cakes we'd brought home. I told him in a min let's take our shoes off first too which point he snatched it out of my hand and it fell on the floor. This was followed by 4 hours of strops , shouting and rudeness. I put him into our time out area so many times but he doesn't seem to care. When I ask if he'd like to come out he just shouts no. All I get from him is , your not my friend anymore, your not being nice, I'm leaving etc etc. I try to ignore the things he says but that seems to make it worse. He's even started to hit and throw things if things don't go his own way. If I tell him off or just remind him to be careful of gentle he flys off the handle. I literally don't know what to do next with him, any help would be very gratefully received

I've just recommended this on another thread, but have you read The Explosive Child? How to Listen so Kids Talk and Talk so Kids Listen is another good one.

I am in exactly the same situation. My 4 year old can get so out of hand. He lashes out over the smallest things. He says the most hurtful things too. He tells people especially his brother (8) he wishes they would die. He told me he would set the house on fire and let me burn and die :(
I just don't know what to do anymore. I am at breaking point. Where do I turn?
