is 9 months too young for a toddler bed?

both our sons co-sleeps with us, but weve been trying to get the younger one back in his cot,

last night DP got him to sleep in our bed then took him to his own room, he put him in his cot and DS freaked straight away like he always does, but then DP put him in his big brothers toddler bed (big bro was in our bed) and he was happy as anything - didnt make a peep.

so little one stayed there happy for about 2/3 hours whilst we watched a film, but when we went up i brought him back into our bed because i wasnt sure about him sleeping in the toddler bed.

what do you think??

Interesting. The Baby Whisperer reckons early bed, early toilet training (not sure I agree with that one), early cup etc is always the way to go. I think if you put something next to the bed for when he falls out I can't see a problem. Perhaps it's the bars he hates and he'll be happy in a bed more like yours.

well there would be a bed guard and a duvet on the floor, monitors on ect??

I wouldn't have put my ds in one at 9 months....what stage is your 9 month old at, is he sitting, crawling? What are your thoughts on what he might do if he was to fall out in the small hours - would he crawl about and would he be able to get into any trouble?

My ds was extremely wriggly in bed and would have fallen out ALL the time so I wouldn't have felt secure with doing it....

hes crawling, pulling himself up, walking along furniture,

hes not that wiggly in bed, when we went up after 2 hours he was in the same position as when we left him.

what about your set up at home - what rooms could he get in if he was to wander at night - what could he bang himself on if he tried to walk along things but wobbled over?

I can see how tempting it must be, if he makes such a fuss when he goes in a cot! Why not try it again for some hours this evening and see if it was a one off or whether he still likes it.

theres a safety gate on the bedroom door, so he couldnt get out of the room, and he would be safe in there,

but im a very light sleeper - and aware of every sound from the boys (dont get much sleep) so if he woke up im 99% certain id get to him before he got out of the bed, especially if i have the monitor on

I wouldnt

mainly because if he starts playing up and wriggling out of it, or climbing over the bed guard, you would be up however many times a night AND then it would almost be impossible to get him back in a cot

but i dont sleep now anyway as theres 2 kids and my DP in the bed!! lol

I took the bars off my sons cot when he was about 14 months but he wasnt ready becasue he kept falling out but not waking up. I was scared og him suffocating so i put his bars back on and we went through months of sleepless nights becasue he hated his cot. Then when he was about 22 months I took his bars off and he is fine. He still wakes up and cries and occasinoally falls out of bed but he wakes up and gets back in.
I think you just have to go through the months of disrupted sleep and then eventually something just clicks and you know they are ready for a normal bed.
He even went through a stage of sleeping in a travel cot in the front room with my husband on the sofa! He slept fine then as well but i knew i had to get him into the routine of sleeping in his own room. You have to keep on just putting them back in their bed, and sometimes that happens all through the night im afraid.

DS1 was in a big bed (normal single size, not toddler) with guard at 12mths, he is such a squirmy sleeper that he kept banging himself on the sides of the cot and waking himself up. After a week of chasing him round the bedroom for 1/2 hr before he passed out, he was sleeping through.
DS2 is 12mths and loves his cot, no need to move him, sleeps through fine, he isn't walking yet anyway.

If I was sleeping with both my boys I'd let them sleep in the bath if they were happy and it meant getting my bed back, not great without sleep

My Ds was in a normal bed ,no gaurds or anything at 9 mths [ shock ]
But before anyone takes me by the neck and strangles me, let me explain.
He was wlking by then and used to climb out of his cot every night at least 6 times .
I reckoned he was safer falling out of a low bed than over cot bars!!

I think i must be in a minority because I get my bed to myself. My husband sleeps downstairs because he snores really badly, my youngest son sleeps in a cot next to my bed and my eldest son sleeps in his own room.
Something to consider Kittylette? Kick em all out!

It is heaven! This is going to sound really bad but i get really annoyed if my husband gets into bed with me because i have got so used to having it all to myself. He is so noisy and always steals the covers.
HOW VERY DARE HE TRY AND SLEEP IN HIS OWN BED

I wouldn;t have done it this early, tbh. But each to their own.

Please be carful with putting quilts etc on the floor, I know you want to soften the fall, if there were to be one, but I remember when I lived in South Beds the local paper ran a story where a father had hid kids on an access visit. He didn't have a cot & the baby fell out of bed, & fell face down onto a pile of pillows & suffocated . I can't rememeber how old the child was, but I rememder thinking it was way too young for a bed.

Cots are there for a reason, if you have to protect against falls with more than a side bar, the child is, imo too young for a bed.

I hate hearing about things like that. I can't even watch the news anymore in case theres anything about children being hurt. I think about things like that and get really upset and scared for my own kids.

mine have all hated the bars on cot and have been in a bed by 12mths. DD2 I cant even get her near the cot so she is in our bed.
