Son being referred to specialist teachers

Our son has just turned 8 yrs old. Out of the blue last night I had a note from his teacher that she wanted to refer him to the areas specialist teaching team for assessment on speech and focus. This came as a complete surprise as nothing had been mentioned at his recent parents evening. He struggles with handwriting and is getting help with that. He reads really well, is good at spelling and maths. He does have a very active imagination and does often go into his own little world.

I've asked to speak to the teacher but am really worried about what this referral is for or might mean?

Has anyone any experience of this?

I haven't got any experience but agree that the teachers should have spoken to you rather than sending in a note,

Does it mention how long you will have to wait?
