9 out of 10 babies are walking by 15 months

Is this true? I read it somewhere (my sister's Dictionary of Symptoms I think) and thought it didn't sound quite right. It also went on to suggest that if a baby isn't walking by this age there is quite likely an underlying problem

Quick poll, when did yours walk?

ds - 12.5 months
dd - 15 months

DD 9 1/2 months

TrinityRhino · 20/01/2007 21:33

dd1 2 weeks after her 1st birthday

dd2 13 months

I think that it may be true about the 9 out of 10 are walking by 15 months but I don't agree at all with the point about 'if they aren't by 15 months' then there is anunderlying problem

Piffle · 20/01/2007 21:34

ds 9 mths
dd 26 mths - underlying issues - was cruising by 10 mths

lulumama · 20/01/2007 21:34

both mine are the odd ones out then !!

DS - 17 months

DD - 16 months

lulumama · 20/01/2007 21:35

and neither of them have any underlying physical problems!!

Mercy · 20/01/2007 21:40

dd - 13 months

ds - 17 months (just over)

I thought it was if your child wasn't even attempting to cruise or walk by 18 months then you should see your GP.

mamama · 20/01/2007 21:42

DS - 11 months

But I thought there was no cause for concern until 18 months and even then, it isn't usually a problem

Flossam · 20/01/2007 21:43

Properly by 12 months.

TheBlonde · 20/01/2007 21:44

DS 15.5 mths

PinkTulips · 20/01/2007 21:44

14 months... she walked holding our hands from 11 months but didn't cop on she could go it alone til she saw the neighbours kid running around and followed suit.

she was apparently quite late so 9/10 sounds right to me.

liquidclocks · 20/01/2007 21:45

DS1 walked at 14 months but tbh this piece of info is very misleading. It's very easy to get and 'average' but just because a child doesn't walk before 15 months doesn't mean something's wrong!

viticella · 20/01/2007 21:47

Oh dear - DS 16.5 months and still crawling/cruising, has been since his first birthday. Maybe tomorrow's the day...

fruitful · 20/01/2007 21:48

dd - 13 months
ds - 16 months (first step, more like 17 months by the time he got going)

It can't be right about there being an underlying problem, or the HVs would be hounding us from 14 months onwards!

juuule · 20/01/2007 21:49

Earliest walked at 9.5m, latest walked at 16m.
The rest were just before or just after 12m.

funnypeculiar · 20/01/2007 21:52

ds - 18 mths - no underlying problems have emerged as yet - other than a tendancy to talk when he should be walking
dd - 10 mths now, no signs of any likely movement for about another 2 years...

CanStarveWillStarve · 20/01/2007 21:55

dd 11 months

Wouldn't have thought the bit about underlying problems was right, but do think that 9 out of 10 probably are walking by 15 months.

Miaou · 20/01/2007 21:56

dd1 - 14 months
dd2 - 15 months
ds - 15 months

So just on the cusp of normal according to that. I agree though, no problem unless they are not bearing their own weight by 18months imho.

TeeCee · 20/01/2007 21:56

DD1 - is 5yrs old and only just starting to take a few unaided steps. (She has Down's syndrome)

DD2 - took her first steps at 8 months. By 10 months old she never crawled again! She now 13 months and is running and manages to get down / over small steps, can get up and down a flight of stairs and climbs onto and over anything and everything.

Two extremes!

serenity · 20/01/2007 21:58

DS1 - 11 mths
DS2 and DD - 12 mths
but I know plenty of children with no problems at all who walked later.

IntergalacticWalrus · 20/01/2007 21:59

DS1 9 months.
DS2 is only 4 months old!

hunkermunker · 20/01/2007 22:00

DS1 was 17mo.

DS2 is 12mo and not walking yet either.

The average age is 14mo, and I've known loads of perfectly normal children who've walked later than that, so I think your sister's book was bolleaux.

hoxtonchick · 20/01/2007 22:00

ds - 15 months
dd - 12 months

theheadgirl · 20/01/2007 22:01

Just to skew the figures, DD3 has Downs, and didn't walk till 30 months old. Now is a silent climbing escapologist ninja girl.

TeeCee · 20/01/2007 22:02

My firends son was 18 months. She was so worried. Having DD1 made me so relaxed and I helped to chill her and just as she was about to make appt to see GP he started.

suedonim · 20/01/2007 22:02

All four walked at around 14mths mark, although dd2 was nearer 15mths, I think.

They were all pretty much later at walking than their peers but I don't think that not walking at 15mths means there's necessarily a problem.
