Please tell me about DDH (developmental dysplasia of the hip)

My DD is just 12 weeks and today is the day after she was fitted with a Pavlik harness. I feel a mixture of sadness and gladness.

I'm glad it's been picked up and our paediatric consultant says her average treatment time is 8 weeks... But I'm just a little sad when I look at her all hoiked up into the position her legs need to be. I KNOW she doesn't mind, she's been completely unaffected by it and seems happy enough bar the odd little frustrated grumble.

I'm praying that this little harness will work so really what I'd like to know is other people's experiences and what happened... I've not had any other input other than from the hospital so really just a mum/dad perspective.

My niece had this....but she's 26 now and the treatment she had was nowhere near as good as the treatment they have now. However, even though her case was very severe...she had almost no hip socket, she is fine! She plays a variety of sports, she had and still has a tonne of friends since she went off to nursery aged 3...and it hasn't affected anything she does in life.

It will work OP....this is not fun or nice for you...of course it's very upsetting for any new Mother to be told something needs to be mended...when you've got your lovely new baby you want everything to go smoothly...but it WILL be fine.

That's really wonderful to hear I think the doctors 'nowadays' are so frightened of giving you false hope that they really downplay the chance of everything being successful. I left feeling pretty negative! She definitely has a hip socket so that's given me some feel goods!

There you are then! Agree about po faced Doctors! They don't want anyone leaping on a single phrase or word and getting upset OR excited do they? So they remain so emotionless and factual!

That's a thread from 2009 which is quite good.

I've just read through it thank you... It's really useful to know that there's a weaning period. I hadn't thought of the fact it might delay her crawling and walking but I guess it's a small price to pay!
