Help! Christmas presents / toys for 6 month old...

Hi everyone,

My daughter will be six months old at Christmas and the entire extended family on both sides are pushing me for what she wants but I've no idea what's good and what's a waste of money!! We are so lucky to have lots of Aunts, Uncles, Grannies, Great Grannies, etc. who are all super keen to get her presents but they all want to make sure they are not duplicating each other so have asked me to tell them what to get. She is only 3 months old at the moment and is my first baby so I am just about managing to get through the day today, never mind work out what she will be needing from 6 months onwards!!

Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas for good toys / equipment / useful items? If I don't come with some ideas we'll end up with 30 sets of identical stacking toys!

THANK YOU!!

Hello, this thread is quite old and some of the suggestions are a little out of date. Take a look at our round up of the best toys for 6-12 month old babies for the latest Mumsnet user recommendations.

Thanks!

DS2 will be 4 months and we've got lots of stuff already from DS1 so he's getting some bath toys, a bath mat/seat from mothercare, a few board books, stacking cups and things for weaning him later on.

In terms of equipment you might need in the future. How about a high chair, a bumbo/snug, a munchkin booster seat, toys to attach to the high chair to distract them/entertain them, weaning equipment. (Spoons, bowls, etc).

Kiddie books
Nice blanket

Will you be moving her into her own room about then? Anything you need for her nursery? Baby sleeping bags, nice light, any furnishings. Clothes are always useful too. On the toys side of things jumperoos are great (or a door bouncer)

Clothes for now and bigger, Clarks voucher for when she needs 1st walking shoes, a box of nappies. Your baby will be 6mo she will never remember her 1st Xmas let alone what gifts she got., ask for practical things don't end up with a house full of toys she probably won't bother with just so others can say they got her x y or z for xmas

  • couple of lamaze type toys
  • manhattan skwish
  • I don't know why, but the Galt pop up toy really appeals to babies that age
  • baby musical instruments like shakers, cage bell, little drum
  • books
  • soft blocks eg these

YY practical gifts for the future. (but flashing led bath ducks are also v v cool at that age)

Books are a really good gift that will last and be enjoyed for years (get board books so they can't be destroyed!) We've made a wish list on Amazon before to avoid duplication - then people can choose what they like. Some of my kids' favourites when babies were:
Where's Spot
Dear Zoo
The very hungry caterpillar
First 100 words (one of those books with photos of everyday objects in)
Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?
Animal hide and seek (an usborne one)
The 'that's not my...' books though these get outgrown quite quickly.
You can also get books for when they're a bit older, like the Julia Donaldson ones (gruffalo etc)
Clothes if you're not too fussy, baby plates, bowls, spoons etc, nice sleeved bibs for weaning.
Musical instruments - baby-safe shakers, drum, bells, xylophone etc
