How to encourage a 4.5 year old boy to walk to school!

My son loves scootering, cycling, playing tennis - but he doesn't like walking much. He's painfully slow. We have a 15 min walk to school. Usually we can scoot but on wet days we don't. He moans and whines and refuses.

He's small for his age, which I'm sure 'makes his walking legs tired' as he puts it. But how to encourage him? Any tips?

Is this the norm amongst 4.5 year olds?

Absolutely the norm in my experience. I gave mine a football to dribble. Worked a treat. I am lucky not to have any major busy road issues on our school run though.

Why don't you scoot on the wet days, seems the obvious solution?

4 year old DD would at a push with a bit of cajoling walk 15min, but balancing bike or scooter would be much preferred - although scooter is probably finished now, preferring bikes.
