almost 6 year old scared of going to the toilet alone

My son is seemingly confident and well adjusted. He is sensitive and boisterous and is quite fearless in the playground. Over the past few weeks or so he has become increasingly scared of going to the toilet on his own especially when at home. I have been going with him and staying until he is ready to leave. I have talked to him about this and he says he is scared and when I ask him of what he isn;t really sure.I am a single parent so there is no one else around, except if we have visitors who uses the toilet. He goes to a very good school and they are quick to mention any concerns but this has never been mentioned. It has got worse since the holidays began. Does anybody have any ideas on what I could do or has dealt with a similar situation?

We are in the same situation but our child is nearly 7 yo. We take turns going to the toilet with him, trying to stand on the stairs rather than in the bathroom atm.

He has no trouble at school as the toilets are on the same floor as the children....buy he dashes off without washing hands there.
