Parents of late walkers please come and reassure me!

So my 16 month old DS still isn't walking. I know all babies develop at their own rate and you shouldn't compare but I can't help but be a tiny bit worried.

He was late sitting, rolling and crawling. He can say one or two words but nothing else really. He can't say dada, he can say no and mam.

Any attempts made to help him stand end in him getting annoyed and upset.

So as title suggests, what age did your LOs walk? I hope he picks it up soon. hes bloody heavy to carry

I am not a parent but my very close friend's DD only walked reliably after her second birthday. She began to walk a tiny bit at about 20 months but then would "knee" about the room.

Now she is 2.3 and walks everywhere.

friend's dd was like this - she is now a graduate, 20 something and keen fell walker- I remember the HV saying as long as she could sit OK not to worry

I think we were pushing 20 months with DS2. He was generally late to sit and crawl. It's OK, once they're up on their feet there's not stopping them! No efforts of ours seemed to help him, he just did it when ready. I think he's a bit risk averse TBH and wasn't confident to try.

It was awful at toddler group when little girls (often) of about 10 months were toddling around and DS was sitting there like a pudding!

I share your pain but don't worry yet

My DS is the same, he is 18 months and only started walking around Xmas - now he runs! He didn't seem to have a practising stage though, he just rolled, crawled, walked one day - no lead up. Still not many words either just kitty, teddy and daddy.

20 months - then one day she just got it! We were referred for physio, but never took up the appt as I was sure she'd do it in her own time. We had a walk in walker - debatable items I know - but she loved it and I could get on with things while she sped around the house.

My dc1 didn't walk till 18 months. My GP said it was because she was developing intellectually instead, not to worry. Dc2 walked before he was one.

Mine was about 20 months too. She knee walked everywhere instead of proper walking for about 6 months.

My oldest and middle child both started walking when they were about 21 months! Unless there is anything obviously a bit odd, I really wouldn't worry.

16 months isn't late - dd2 is just starting at 17mths (also a fan of the knee walking!) DS was about 16mths DD1 was 18.5mths

They're all fine. 'late' is much more like more than 2 years old apparently.

How good is he at crawling?

My oldest was an amazing bum shuffler. She used to lie on her back and propel herself backwards across the room. It was quite disturbing to watch, I was sure she was going to break her neck!

She didn't need to walk - it was 16/17 months before she did.

So glad I found this! am starting to get a bit concerned about my son. He's almost 19 months and while he walks round furniture etc he isn't walking independently. Everyone says he's just a bit lazy but it is frustrating!

DS1 on his first birthday, DS2 nearly 2, DD not properly independently till 2.5. At just 4 she's finally caught up properly and is able to hop, jump, run and skip.

DS1 is the one who has dyspraxia and motor control issues even though he was by far the earliest walker.

16months really isn't behind, but I do remember the frustration. I had a friend with a DD born a week after DD who walked at 7 months. DD was siting quietly and chewing a teething toy, this little one was running off and into everything. Each week at toddler group we'd smile and chat and watch and play with our very very different children.

Both of mine were 18 months before they walked. They are 8 & 11 and walk just fine

Mine were 22 months and 20 months. They were both bottom shufflers and got there in the end! My back ached for years though. Now 10 and 7 and I love to show them the videos and see how big they were. We never had stair gates because by the time they moved they understood much more.

My youngest walked at 17m exactly. I didn't think that was late as such. More just at the latter end of normal. Several years on is just the same mobility wise as the other earlier walkers.

Hi op don't worry honestly! Ds was bum shuffler walked around 18 months and dd little madam was 2!! I used to panic so much but the gp was always really blase and after that they were fine!

I'll roll out my much-used story if it helps .

There is a photo in my Mum's photo album labelled "Mintyy's first steps". It is dated August bank holiday 19. So, the August bank holiday is right at the end of the month, right? And my birthday is at the end of September 19.

In other words, I was 23 months before I took my first steps. I am a fully functioning (albeit rather lazy person), I promise you.

After 19 months I was wondering ifI should be starting to worry. But DD walked soon after 20 months.
And I tell you what, once she did eventually start walking - she never really fell over. And we did away with the buggy soon after too.

Mine was 18m or thereabouts. Never rolled or crawled either, but had perfected a speedy sitting bum-shuffle. When she finally got up it only took a few weeks to confident walking. Second child developed a bit more average, rolled and crawled, and walked much sooner.

I have 2 dc that walked after 18 months, dc1 just one day decided to get up and walk everywhere , dc2 started after 18 months but still took months of staggering, falling etc before walking steadily. Dc2 is the one more able to scoot, bike, swim etc as it happens however both were quite 'late' to do all these things.

16 months is not late! One of mine was 15 months, the other 16... I've seen a 10 month old running! Lots walk at that age, they all catch up eventually.

DS walked at 29 months. He's 13 now and is athletic's champion at his secondary school, particularly for 100m and middle distance running. Fret ye not.

DS1 started standing holding stuff at 10 months but didn't walk till 18 months
DS2 didn't stand till 12 months and got moving at about 14 months
BUT
All around us were children who still weren't walking, quite a few at 18-20 months.
as with all things though if it is bothering you, pop into your HV clinic and chat to them about it.

At 17 months and 2 weeks dd couldn't even stand. By 18 months she was walking competently. It was as if she was waiting until she could do it perfectly before she bothered to try.

I was advised by a GP friend to take her to the doctor if not walking at 18 months for a quick hip check.
