2.8 toddler uses a lot of made up silly words

My son is a good, clear talker. But more and more he's using silly words. If asked a question he might say 'pomme pomme bum bum' (for example!) or insert it into someone's name 'mummy lorry'

How common is this? Sometimes we crack up and he loves that he has made us laugh and since I encourage him to do or be whatever he is, we don't stop it. But I do find it annoying at times and his peers don't do it.

I have a 3yo who does this too, and happily sings songs of complete jibberish. Sometimes it's sweet and funny, sometimes it's downright annoying. I try to ignore when it's annoying. I figured it's just a phase as they're learning to talk, and using progressively more advanced language. Must try to video one of her songs for blackmail use when she's older!

It's great! He's exploring language and having fun with it. DD did it at that age. A year later she has 100s of imaginary animals all with made up names. The best bit is when I ask her to repeat a name two or three times she somehow remembers them :)

He's playing with language. It's brilliant. My favourite ds words from this age were "huggle" and "wrappaging" being a portmanteau of wrapping and packaging.

My 2.8 DD does the same thing. She's normally a very clear talker too, but has started introducing nonsense words/sounds where she previously spoke properly and making up nonsense songs. Like you say, sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's irritating (if I'm asking her a question I want a proper answer to). Hopefully it'll pass......

At 2.2 we're at the bit where he creates his own words. A Hoover is a 'boosh' and water/milk/juice/anything that flows has always been 'moat' for some reason! He talks pure gobbledygook but also increasingly clearly.

My brother (now 37) apparently called the tin opener a 'wacky', something to do with the noise it made?!

I love it, it's an insight into a toddlers world. ....but we've not got the annoying bit yet!
