Baby not focusing in faces or objects - very worried!

Hello,

I am really worried about my 3 and a half week old baby. Last Wednesday I asked our midwife about if it's normal that he is not focusing in objects or faces (I read in the NHS book 0 to 5 that we should consult this in our checkup) and she seemed very surprised too. She told me to ask the GP and although he said his vision was OK he couldn't explain if it's common this kind of behavior.

I have been reading everywhere that babies get very interested in faces, many times even from birth. My DS, however, seems to avoid looking at me, always turning his head or looking somewhere else. I have also tried to use a bright object but he does the same.

Has anybody had a similar problem or know more about when children start to develop this skill? I know DS is quite young but it's my first baby and I cannot stop thinking it may be something wrong. I am so worried that this is even affecting my relationship with him as I cannot stop examining him and trying to look at me.

Many thanks to all of you!
L

Hi thanks I think my baby is getting there Sometimes its difficult when you read about milestones and timeframe and start stressing yourself about it too much. :-)

Hi laura I wanted to know how are u and ur baby? Unfortunately my baby is not doing much. I am getting very worried now. He is not smiling either I am very worried that it will not impeove and paeds will diagnose him with smth. Its so upsetting when there are so many healthy babies around They are all smiles and focus since 3_4 weeks

Hi Lora,

My baby has started to focus more but this has started in the last weeks (5-6 weeks). I have been reading a lot about this and it seems that in most places they say it is normal to start focusing around 6-8 weeks. I found this document from the Australian document quite useful: www.health.wa.gov.au/docreg/Education/Population/Child_Health/Growth_and_Development/HP3002_child_dev0-3months.pdf

I hope it helps. Please let me know how things are going
