2 year old keeps closing one eye?

My DD (2.5) keeps closing her left eye, all the time! ... And sometimes rubbing it. It doesn't look red or puffy or anything but has been going on for 3 weeks now and it's starting to worry me...

Any idea what it could be?

I'd say you need to take her to the GP or an optician to check there's nothing worrying going on tbh.

Dd was like this. Turns put she had a grass seed embedded on her cornea. Definitely get it checked out.

Get it checked this would really concern me, maybe even take him to walk in centre or a a&e over the long bh wend.

I would take her to optician..she could well be becoming long sighted and developing a lazy eye..so may need glasses. It is very common.

Does she do it lots or at specific times? My ds does this when he's feeling shy with someone he doesn't know well- Kind of 'if I can't see you you're not really there!'

Optician? I close one eye if I'm not wearing glasses or lenses. I can't focus properly with two eyes for some reason.

She doesn't do it at specific times, it's just all the time... It's become more frequent so I've only really just started to think something might be wrong... Before this week I thought it was just habit.

Is being long sighted etc hereditary? Just because my DH and I both don't wear glasses and have good vision generally. Ill take her to the doctor...thanks everyone.

Hi Curious....just wondered if you'd be been to docs yet and how you got on?? my sister has said my niece has started doing the same and after seeing the replies on this thread, advised her to go to docs...she is going tomorrow xx

I'm taking her to the docs tomorrow...I tried to take her to an optician on Saturday but after letting us make the appointment they turned us away once there as she is under 5 ( despite telling them on the phone that she was 2.5!)

I'll keep you posted, let us know how your DN gets on?

Make sure you get referred for assessment.

A friend of mine allowed her GP to fob her off and she left her concerns unaddressed. Now she's discovered that her little boy can hardly see at all from one lazy eye and, as he's now 6, they are running out of time to get it working again.

My DS did this at 3. I thought it was habit, but mentioned it to a member of the Public Health Team and we were referred. Bless him - his right eye was almost +6 (shortsighted) and he suffers from Amblyopia (lazy eye)! He'll always need glasses but starting treatment early has given him the best chance.

Well the doctor said that she couldn't see anything sinister but would refer me to an eye specialist at the hospital, but that it would be quite a long wait.

I'm utterly convinced there's something wrong though... Some pictures of her as a bridesmaid last week clearly show her eye looking strange, like a crossed eye almost but I can only see it in photos. And she's still closing it and squinting and rubbing it.

Maybe I could go private? I wouldn't know how to go about that though...

She said she didn't know for sure but that it isn't unusual to wait 6 months..

I think it could be something too, I shut one eye all the time, have poor un treated vision in one eye and the other is laser perfect (surgery).
I can't get on with glasses with one clear lens so I manage but I do shut one sometimes

If I were in your position I would contact the secretary of the consultant she's been referred to and ask them how long the waiting list is and to find out whether that that timescale is likely to make a difference to the success of any treatment. It may be that she will still be plenty young enough to make any corrections but it's also possible that they will slot her in sooner as she's a child.

I would still probably feel that I wanted my child seen sooner, rather than later, so you can always ask the secretary if the consultant has a private secretary you could contact.

I went to 26 opthomologist and everyone telling me different reason and I ended up seeing neurologist and he prescribed some mental.pills but I refused to give it to her...please any advice or anyone facing the same thing?
