no babbling or cooing from 4 month old

my 4 month old dd is very quiet. She's pretty much on track for her milestones, can lift head when on tummy, can roll onto her side but not completely over, smiles when she sees/ interacts with us, she even started to laugh at ds when he's being silly. She is very placid and easy going, rarely cries and sleeps well. generally she's a little star. But she doesn't really make noise. She doesn't babble or coo, she sometimes makes a short 'ah' sound but even that is pretty rare. I talk to her and stuff to try to encourage her but at what point should i worry? Her hearing seems fine as she jumps if someone coughs/ sneezes/ claps etc and she's not expecting it. I'm pretty sure ds was much more verbal than this? The only other time she makes noise is when she's falling asleep chewing her fingers and you get a repeated yayayaya type sound. Please someone say your dc were like this too and it all turned out ok!

My baby is 4.5 months old and is still not making many noises! She smiles and "silent" laughs. She is otherwise developing normally and her hearing is definitely ok. Just getting a bit worried as my friends babies are so vocal my LO is so quiet! I talk to her all the times, read and sing etc. Anyone else experienced the same thing and everything turned out ok? should I be worried?

amankaura · 02/12/2021 09:13

@NinjaChipmunk how is ur baby now ? my baby doing same thing . m so worried
if u give rply then it would be great help.

Jodielee29 · 03/12/2021 22:10

@amankaura my baby is doing great now. I paid for a private hearing test which was normal. Within a few days of having the test she started babbling, squealing, etc. My LO is just a very chilled, laidback baby. She still picks and chooses when she wants to be vocal and when she just wants to be quiet. Im sure your LO will start ‘talking’ when they are ready. I found my LO was focusing on different skills such as motor and decided to practice verbal last Smile they all develop in their own time I suppose. It’s hard not to worry though but I’m sure they are fine.

SassyPants87 · 06/03/2023 16:24

@amankaura how did your baby progress with sound/language? My baby is 5 months old and won’t coo or babble :(

Jodielee29 · 07/03/2023 08:37

@SassyPants87 my DD is now 21 months old and can count from 1-10, do the alphabet , knows all her primary and secondary colours and knows many more words. Her childcare teachers say she is very advanced for her age 😊 your baby is probably taking everything in and will start babbling and coo’ing soon. I understand how worrying it is. Does your baby hit milestones in other ways?

Abhi1 · 29/01/2025 16:44

My baby is 4.5 month old, same situation not cooing at all, smile a lot but no sound. What is ur baby right now?

LemonBiscuit12 · 09/03/2025 23:10

@Abhi1 How is your little one doing now? My 4.5 month old is in the same situation. He started to giggle but no coos/other noise yet.

SassyPants87 · 10/03/2025 06:50

@LemonBiscuit12 oh gosh this post feels like a lifetime ago! He’s 2 now and will not stop talking!! I would say he probably talks more than my eldest did that at that age. He also has a really good understanding of what other people are saying to him. I know it’s super hard to not worry but most likely they will communicate/ babble when they feel ready to/want to. My little boy is a stubborn little thing and I can never get him to do anything it’s all when he wants to do it

LemonBiscuit12 · 12/03/2025 05:47

@SassyPants87 Glad to know your little guy is doing okay!! As you said, it’s very hard to not worry. When did he start to coo or babble?

SassyPants87 · 12/03/2025 10:22

@LemonBiscuit12 he honestly didn’t really coo or babble much at all so I can’t exactly say when he started. It’s like he pretty much went straight to saying words here and there and then all of the sudden he’s stringing together sentences

Yas1362 · 02/07/2025 13:22

Hi. I know it’s old post but I wonder how did it go for your DD? Did she have later on any language delay?

Yas1362 · 02/07/2025 13:34

Hi @amankaura i wonder how did it go for your son? No language delay or developmental delay?

BlueyBingo21 · 13/11/2025 22:35

How is your little one @LemonBiscuit12 ? My LO is 4 months and is a very quiet baby! He makes noise when he is crying or settling to sleep but not when he is awake and happy in the day!
