Gosh, what a large (if gorgeous) baby I seem to have produced.

Says it all, really. She was 8lb at birth, so not enormous, but five weeks later is 11lb. I am very happy that she is gaining weight well - she is EBF - but was surprised she had gained 3lb since birth.

But the really impressive thing is her length/height. Today, she is 62cm crown to heel, give or take a cm or so, as babies are hard to measure. She will be too long for her Moses basket in a couple of weeks at this rate. I looked on the growth charts and she is off the top end of the centiles. She was in an 6-9mo vest the other day and to be fair there were a couple of cm of growing room but it wasn't exactly baggy.

DH is 5'11" and I am a measly 5'4", and neither of us have any relatives who graze their heads on door frames.

Basically, is this within the realms of normal and did your tall babies stay tall or average out?

Don't worry. DH and I are similar heights as you and DS was 8lb 11oz at birth. He was bf until 6 months and no one believed he was putting on that sort of weight without formula. I think he was close to 60cm at birth and out of the Moses basket by 10 weeks.

He has always been above the 90th centile for both weight and height and at 4yrs he is still the tallest and most 'solid' of his friends.

All babies/children are different, please don't worry, it sounds as if you and DD are doing fine.

Growth does decelerate after the early crazy days.
DS put on about a pound a week to begin with, he's just a bit bigger than average now at 11 mo

DD put on about 3lb a month until she was 10m, then she plateaued for ages. Was 98th centile, now 75th or thereabouts.

Lovely reassuring news, thank you! I would type more but have a massive baby stuck to my chest and am on phone...

My own DD was very similar - born 7lb but 54cm in length & gained weight really quickly too - remained head & often shoulder too taller than all her peers in both nursery & school up until age 6,1/2 ish, she then slowed right down & was over taken by all her friends & ended up as one of the smallest in class, at nearly 10, she's now growing again & in the last couple of months or so has pretty caught them up - not tallest, but no longer shortest either, she sems pretty average height now & is slowing again

We are a bit different to you in that DH is exceptionally tall & I'm average height, so at birth she was predicted to be very tall - which they (Drs) now think she will be the tall side of average :)

So yes it does seem to even out - I should add though, you do get throw backs - both my DH (6'5") & my Uncle (6'3")have very tiny parents - 5ft & 5ft on both sides - no other tall relatives in living memory, though DH apparently has a great, great grandmother who was exceptionally tall at 6ft - no idea on my families side - but seems DHs tall gene goes back that far

My dn was born at 6lb 15 but grew very quickly - but 6 months he was moving to 12-18 clothes for the length. He is now 3.5 and wearing 5-6 clothes which all need belts/adjustable waists to keep them up!

At the other end of the scale DS was born the same weight and at 2.7 is still in 12-18 clothes!

DD2 was 8lb 4oz & 59cms at birth. Grew astonishingly tall & wide until about 18 months when she started slowing down slightly & thinning out. She is likely to still be tall I'd say but is now 95th centile rather than being about 2cms over the 99.6th!

My son was9 and a half pounds at birth and put on a pound to a pound and a half a week from birth onwards. he is still on the 110th centile for height and weight. I was the same as a baby and it continued until I was about 13. I stopped, everyone carried on and mostly caught up with me. I think everyone is different, and has their own genetic potential.
