How many hours per night does your 5 year old sleep for?

My 5 year old DD is put to bed at 8pm but never falls asleep before 10pm. She gets up at 7 so she gets no more than 9 hours sleep a night. Is this normal? It seems like very little sleep to me so I thought I'd do a survey. Her sister is two years younger and sleeps 7-7.30 every night.

MegBusset · 26/06/2012 11:36

DS1 usually asleep by 8, wakes 6.30-7 most mornings. Though on Sunday did shock us all by sleeping in til gone 9!

Is good to see this thread as shows my 5.10 year old ds isn't only one like he is. He's in bed by 8 and often faffs about for a good hour and up about 6.45. My friends ds who is a little bit younger gets over an hour more per night.

Mine is very similar to the OP, 9-10pm sleep (although in bed at 8pm) and wakes at 7am or earlier. I believe he only needs 9hrs sleep which frankly is what I need!!

Older dc's were much better sleepers - 12 hours almost fixed...my eldest was a dream..it went downhill from there.

11-12 hours usually, he has aways slept a lot, at 6 months old he was sleeping 13 hours or more plus naps. Lovely child. Just don't ask me about his little sister, I've paid my dues!

Littleplasticpeople · 26/06/2012 19:35

10 or 11 hours usually. Bed at 7, asleep very quickly, awake by 5.30-6 everyday. Maybe ten times since birth he has slept 12 hours!

TwoBedsAndACoffeeMachine · 26/06/2012 20:04

DS is nearly 5 and goes to bed at 7pm, alseep for 7:30pm awake around 7 am so roughy 11.5 hours. I am lucky though. He's always been a brilliant sleeper and didn't drop his naps until he was 4 and half. DS2 is TOTALLY different and fights sleep like a champion. He's only 6 months but h has FAR less sleep than DS1 ever did.

My five year old starts getting ready for bed at 6.30, by the time he's been to the loo, cleaned his teeth, washed and changed into PJs it's about 6.45, we read together (either us to him or him to us) for a little while and generally put the light off as close to 7pm as we can, he is normally asleep by around 7.30, sometimes 8. He wakes around 7am ish. so normally around 11-11.5 hours.

holyfishnets · 02/07/2012 23:12

Mine are all 6.30pm to 7am. They need their sleep and I don't know anyone else whos kids sleep this long!

BlueberryPancake · 03/07/2012 09:30

usually aslee by 8, wakes between 6.30 and 7.

Why does it take her two hours to fall asleep? Does she look tired in the morning? I do think they are short nights, tbh.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 03/07/2012 09:37

In bed at 7 and asleep within half an hour. I wake him at 7.30 do around 12 hours. When at his dads he gets put to bed at 9pm fri and sat nights and is horrible for days after while he catches up. Yest he was asleep at 6.30 he will be 6 in nov

DD is 8 in oct and she is in bed between 7.30 and 8 always asleep within half hour and she wakes at 7 so normally 11-11.5 hours.

Think my kids take after me though I love my sleep!

DD (5 next month) goes to bed between 7 and 8 depending on what we're doing. Sometime she goes to sleep straightaway, usually be 8 but a few times its been 9. It seems like she sometimes needs a play with her cuddly toys and a coupld of books to read by herself to unwind.

She wakes between 6 and 7, but again sometimes we have had to get her up at 7.

So, basically she sleeps most nights from about 7.30 to 6.30 Smile.

My 5 yr old goes to bed between 7 and 7.30 pm. He's usually asleep by 8, or 8.15 at the latest. Then I wake him up at 7 for school, and sometimes I have to wake him up at around 8.30 at the weekends. He takes after me though, not his dad. Love my sleep I do Grin

BabyGiraffes · 04/07/2012 13:24

About 10ish. Trying to have her in bed with lights out by 7.30 but she rarely sleeps before 8ish and often not until closer to 9. Drives me insane because by chatting loudly and popping out of her room like a jack in the box she keeps dd2 awake who really does want to sleep by 7.30 at the very latest (she's 2). And then they are both grumpy as hell in the morning especially when I have to wake them.

BabyGiraffes · 04/07/2012 13:25

10ish hours at night that should read.

Gill79 · 04/07/2012 14:36

9 or 10 hrs at 4 yrs 5 mo. Never needed much sleep. Ds2 going same way, only needs daytime powernap at 8 months. Sigh.....
