About 3 months-the sooner the better.

DD was 4 months I think

DD was 2 or 3
DS1 was about 3/4 months, he went when she did
DS2 the same.

All kids swam at least once a week with us, lessons from 3-4.

Water confidence and enjoyment are a major step in learning to swim

6 months. We paid a fortune for Waterbabies sessions - and loved them. I didn't take DS to any other paid-for activities (lots of local mum & baby groups here are free) so I knid of told myself the money was OK.... We don't go very often now, but he still loves the water and I'm now looking for his first "proper" lessons.

My kids were young (before 6 months) and are all very happy in the water now. But I don't think you've left it too late - I know lots of people whose kids started at age 3 and are fine. 3 is a good age as you often don't have to go into the pool with them any more! (which solves your sibling problem too)
