2 year old DS suddenly frightened of going to bed....HELP!

Last week DP's parents took DS (2.4) away with them for a few days to visit family and stayed in a hotel. He wouldn't sleep in the travel cot provided for him, absolutely hated it, so he slept in bed with them for those four nights.

Since he came back bedtime has become a nightmare. He gets very scared and starts crying and clinging to us the second we enter his bedroom. The first night I let him sleep in our bed and DP ended up on the sofa and since then he has gone to sleep in his own room but only after much crying and one of us having to stay and hold his hand until he falls asleep. If he wakes in the night it starts all over again. Things don't seem to be getting any better - how can I stop him from being so frightened o be on his own? He has a great bedtime routine and we talk about going to bed to give him time to get used to the idea, it's the second we enter his room the problems start. Before he went away we never had any problems.

It's breaking my heart, not to mention wearing us all out. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

How about changing his bed? If he is in a cot still taking the sides off? Getting a duvet with his favourite toy on it? Peppa pig or cars or something? Maybe a nightlight too? Making his bed a treat to go into?
