Mega-long baby - what is the earliest you used a bed?

My baby is 98th percentile for length and will probably outgrow his cot by 12 months unless I stop feeding him (joke.) What is the earliest anyone put their LOs in beds and how was it?

My dds were in a bed at 14/15 months, I think. They are 6 and 4 now - crumbs it's so easy to forget these things.

springerspaniel · 09/01/2006 18:01

Did you use one of those side rail things?

ds was 12months when i put him in his bed, with a Tomy bedrail.

HunkersDSHasNoFlowertotGoodies · 09/01/2006 18:02

I know another little boy who's similar in length (was above the 100th percentile but is now about 98th) and he's still in his cot at 20m, so he may be OK.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 09/01/2006 18:02

They curl up though. Don't forget an adult bed is only a couple of inches longer than some men and they seem to manage.

Keep him in his cot as long as possible.

SPARKLER1 · 09/01/2006 18:02

yes they had a bedrail - they were little fidgets.

meggmoo · 09/01/2006 18:03

My ds is really tall, there's no way he's going in a bed yet (getting him in the cot at 19 months is hard enough!

misdee · 09/01/2006 18:06

DD2 WHO WAS ABOVE ALL PERCENTILES WAS IN A BED AT ABOUT 18MONTHS OLD. oops sorry bout caps.

Kittypickle · 09/01/2006 21:16

DS shot off the chart for height and has been sleeping in a cot until this week during the day, he's 2.4.

BABY2 · 10/01/2006 13:56

just put ds who was 1 at start of year in cot bed with bed rail at the weekend all has gone well so far.he hasnt got out yet, dont think he knows he can just get out on his own yet!!!!

BABY2 · 10/01/2006 13:57

ds was 2 at start of year not 1

Wills · 11/01/2006 18:00

Personally I'd invest in a longer cot . My very short 2 year old (at the opposite end) has just moved into a bed because we're moving temporarily into a rental house and wanted to reduce confusion etc. Keeping her in the bed is the problem. Its a big problem!!!

Clayhead · 11/01/2006 18:05

Both of mine were in beds by 15-18 months.

fruitful · 11/01/2006 18:22

I think the problem is not that they might fall out (put bed against wall and put bed rail thing on other side). The problem is that they can climb out of beds. And wander along the corridor. And into your bed. So any sleep training you might have to do still is really difficult. The older they are, the easier it is (in theory) to make them stay in bed (they understand the kind of bribery where the bribe arrives the next morning ).

You can always put a stairgate on the bedroom door though, that helps.

Wills · 11/01/2006 21:16

Ah, stairgate on the door? Good idea - many thanks

mummygow · 11/01/2006 21:31

my dd was in a bed at 18 mnths

Nemo1977 · 11/01/2006 21:41

Ds went into a bed at 12mths and was absolutely fine. I used a bedguard for 2 mths with him and then changed his bed to a mothercare extending bed so it is low to the floor but extends to size of a full length bed.Had a stairgate on his door until he moved rooms in the summer. He had it as a toddler bed until he was 22mths and now it is a full size length.

My little one was 60 cm long at birth, but she got progressively shorter as time went on. I thought I had given birth to a giant. She isn't that tall now, in fact her classmates have overtaken her.
