My DS won't dress up as Joseph in the school play

Ive never posted on here before but I'm running out of ideas now.
My DS is 5 and has been picked to be Joseph in the school play. The problem is, he refuses point blank to dress up in the costume I've got him. I picked him up from school today and they told me the only way he'd wear it was if he was out of the classroom on his own!
I would never make him do anything he doesnt want to do, but when he's at home he dresses up as Darth Vader ALL the time!! Slight difference I know.......
Has anybody got any ideas for me to try......

Could you get him an apron and some carpenter's tools to go in the pocket and see if that would do? Perhaps a pencil behind the ear to complete the costume if my df's anything to go by.

Has he explained why? Is it your normal 'biblical times' costume; does he think it looks like a dress? If that or any other fairly good reason then I think its worth changing his costume, he's only 5 bless im!

If no real reason then you might have to explain that if he wont wear it then he cant be Joseph.

When I was little (6 I think), I was picked to be snow white but refused to wear the costume. For me, it was because I was terrified, hated drama and didn't want to be snow white. Don't make him if he doesn't want to, we don't all have to be Joseph!

I'm not sure why he won't/doesn't like the thought of dressing up as Joseph. I don't think it's the fact it's a "dress" coz I've asked him that. I've had a little chat with him 2nite and I think it's because he thinks everybody will look at him but I've told him that all his little mates will be dressed up aswell so he seems pretty pleased about that
Think it's gunna be a work in progress but there's no way I'm going to "make" him do it. Just not worth it

Could he dress up in his Darth Vader outfit and still play Joseph? I think it lighten the mood in what can be a bit of a repetitive little narrative!
