First day of potty training.... I have taken the plunge!

Ds is 2.9, can pull his own pants down etc. But what do I expect? If he wets 3 times today, does this mean her isn't ready for big boy pants?

and when will he definately get it?

My DS is 3.1 and has no interest in potty training... I sometimes feel embarrised that he is not trained!! Good luck

ds is 20months...have been sitting him on potty every morning and night for 2weeks now...i wait for him to do his business then do the whole 'YAYYYYY WELLDONE, CLEVER BOY'
its gone from 20mins sitting there to 10mins..and he even done a poo on there last night!! imagine a "YAYYY WELLDONE, CLEVER BOY" with clapping and dancing! (and thats just me!)
he still wears a nappy all the time, and deffo not ready for full time potty training..but i think that by doing it this way, he is getting used to it and will not be a 'big step' for him to take ...slowly does it..

colditz, I wouldn't take wetting himself to mean that he isn't ready. When I trained ds1, I took off the nappy and put pants on. For about three days he did lots of little pees all over the house and each time he did I said "Never mind, next time do it in the potty". By around the third day he started asking for the potty.

He did have the odd accident after that and it was risky taking him anywhere so I would put pull-ups on him, but luckily that didn't confuse him and he did still ask for the potty.

Good luck, I would say give it a few days and if it's not working out then have a break.

Hi, im am potty training my dd 17 months. Shes doing really well but i still keep her in a nappy, just getting her used to it, she does both wee and poo!!! I have a potty and a toilet seat thing ya know, so maybe thats an idea for your ds. I wouldnt say hes not ready, oh one thing i read was to record the times each day he does a poo and then you can put him on the potty/toilet just b4 this maybe it will stop him wetting himself so much???

Hi colditz. Well we've JUST done it with DS 2.6 and it took almost 2 weeks before we had a totally dry day. The first 2 days I would say we had lots of puddles. I would put him in pants and a t-shirt, no trousers or socks (less washing!), and every time he wet himself we would go and sit on the toilet for a minute then get cleaned up and changed. By day 3 he was just getting a tiny bit wet then stopping himself, running for the toilet and managing to get the rest in the toilet. This went on for maybe a week and during that time we still used a pull-up if out but tried not to go out too much to avoid confusing him. And then finally after about 10 days he started asking for the toilet before he wet himself but still some accidents. Now after a little over two weeks we've only had 1 accident in the last 3 days and that one really wasn't even his fault (I was outside and he was at the door shouting for me!).

I remember when we tried a few months ago and he clearly wasn't ready he just wet himself every half and hour or so. This time it was obvious after a few days that he was gaining bladder control so we persevered. I would give it a few days and see if any progress is being made.

one thing i did very differently this time round (which seemed to help - took much longer with dd) was NOT ask him every 5 minutes if he wanted the toilet. I figured that the trick was not to teach him to use the toilet because I told him to but to teach him to recognise for himself when he needed to go.

Hi, although this wasnt my original thread, i need some help too!!! My dd 17 months does both wee and poo in her potty or toilet, i already put up a post. Im just wondering if maybe i started to early as she cant say wee or toliet yet etc so she cant tell me when she needs to go.

When we'r at home, she picks the potty up and drags it to me!!!! So thats obvious, but when im out and about, i cant see how she would tell me. Iv tried to teach her to say wee or make the sound or wee (sorry if too much info!!) I also bought a portable potty for when im out but i just cant see it working probably coz i havnt really a clue of what im doing lol!!! Any advise would be great!

Could you perhaps try and teach her a hand sign for when she need the potty, something simple. It's great that she's already telling you.

Clapping perhaps, or waving. If you clap every time she uses the potty she might make the connection.

Tilly was dry at 18 months and I just took her out of nappies and into knickers via a bare bum in the house - it was summer though! I reckon just persevere and they will get sick of wetting them selves after a couple of weeks.
Not sure what to suggest about the non verbal issue as think Tilly could say wee but certainly not potty or poo etc. Just keep saying 'wee' all the time like a mad woman until she gets it??? It's certainly not too early and would be a shame not to continue.
Stick at it - it's great to have them potty trained even if still using nappies at night. My next one is due in March and am getting excited about getting all my tiny nappies down from the loft though!!!

Hmmm, despite it only being this summer my brain has since been fried!! Reckon a couple of weeks of accidents and then vastly improved. We still have the occasional accident, mostly the 'can't be bothered to stop playing' type though.
My friend's kids are 6 months older (were 2 in Sept) and we all potty trained together. They have both just gone nappy free at night too which is encouraging....

I haven't even thought about potty training dd2 (20 months) but she is quite mad about taking her nappy off if she is wet and given the cance won't have it put back on. Only today I ralised she will go for 4 hours without weeing and then has a gush so something must be going on in her head. Think I might have to have a few days at home and monitor her without a nappy and perhaps I will get her to the potty in time.

Tegan go for it. Start by just sitting her on the potty at bedtime and reading a book so she gets used to it. Taking a few days off is a good idea if she likes the potty. Remember to leap around clapping like a loony the first time she does something in it - you will be doing this a lot for the next few months! Tilly still claps and says hurray (and pooey)when her Dad has a poo!

Thant another thing that is totally confusing dd. She will demand she goes to the bathroom with dh just so she can watch him have a wee, but if I announce I'm going she has no interest.
