Thumb sucking to the point of injury!

My 11month old gorgeous little man sucks his thumb CONSTANTLY. I never really saw it as a problem but he now has a big open wound where his top teeth are rubbing on the little bit where his thumb meets his forefinger. I'm reluctant to put anything on it as he'll end up eating it! Anyone had anything like this before. He is teething at the moment so do you think it will just pass?

Ohhhhh it gets so much worse! Try not to spew when they come in covered in mud from the garden filthy from head to toe except for that thumb! My brother was a professional thumb sucker (now 20 and still going strong!) And he had a really weird shaped thumb! Although it never affected his teeth - I remember my mum getting upset after a health visitor told her off for allowing him to do it, she got that anti-nail-biting stuff and put a bit on, my brother cried his eyes out (about 6 y/o) and my mother felt so guilty she never tried to stop him again! Just be glad it isn't a dummy! XxX

We had this at about 21months. Do you have any Lansinoh kicking around from BF? At the advice of Mnetters we put this on his thumb at night when he was asleep. It helped the skin to heal, and also almost bang on 2 yrs old, he stopped sucking his thumb. (greasy ick on thumb can't have been nice). Coincidence or not, it was good timing for us. Though at 11 months you may still want the thumb for self soothing.

DD did this as well when she went to nursery at 12m and was sucking frantically to try and cope. Made me really Sad. But it did heal itself despite the constant attention - now she has a big callous across her thumb.
