are your dc's wearing contact lenses for sport and PE?

Optician suggested yesterday - I know my dd who is 13 would love them (she plays footy twice a week), in fact she was begging me to agree to book an appointment.

I have a worry about hygiene (dirty hands when outting them on before PE).

I bet she would wear them at school for the rest of the day on PE days.
Is not that she hates her glasses, but she knows older kids are allowed to wear contact lenses.

Anything else I should know or find out about before agreeing for her to have monthly disposables at a cost of £20/month (all family have astigmatism, hence cost).

We've been offered contact lenses for DD (14) although currently she 'prefers glasses' ! - like you whole family are glass wearers so she's never seen it as an issue.

We haven't tried lenses yet as I with you on hygiene concerns (added to fact she's not that bothered), but can see a possible need in the future when glasses will be a problem in sport ..

Boots offered a free trial along with support and training for her (I wasn't happy that I could teach her as I've never tried lenses and personally don't fancy them!)

Will watch with interest for any other comments...

My DS has had contacts since aged 10 with only one bout of conjunctivitis (he is now 16).
Early on I supervised the taking in and out and made sure he was washing hands properly and he got used to it quickly.

The only thing that will drive you nuts is losing them occasionally.

I had contact lenses (back in the day.. in early 80's) when i just started secondary school. It was 100% fine.
She doesnt need to put them in at school just before pe does she - wear them for the whole day, and then you can supervise the putting in if you want to in the morning. Again - why take them out after PE - what is wrong with keeping them in until she gets home?

I loved my lenses - i felt 'normal' like other kids - not so many wore glasses as they do now, but i bet a lot of kids who wear glasses today still wished they didnt!

I had contact lenses when I was 13 and I'm em 48 now (much more difficult to get used to then and clean) I've never had an eye infection, I kid you not. I've lost quite a few lenses over the years though.

Daily disposables are the way to go (she could just wear them on PE days to save money) and just keep them in all day. Good to carry a spare pair of glasses at all times for emergencies and to wear on swimming days.

If she is keen to have them she'll most likely be absolutely fine.

why not carry on with the glasses and just have the contact lenses for PE day or sporting activities - this would save quite a lot
