Oooo, bet you can't wait for them to arrive!

I guess it depends on the age/capability of the baby. When ds & I started he was 9mo and we were told to introduce a couple of signs a week. Eg. stick with 'milk' & 'food' for the first week and use them at every opportunity, then use 'milk', 'food', 'sleep', 'bird' (or whatever) as much as possible in the second week, etc. But if the child is older you could probably get away with 3-4 signs iykwim. I would start off slow and then pick up the number as you find what your child's ability is. HTH

I signed with both ds's. Ds1 was an early talker, so he went straight to words, but ds2 has glue ear and it has been marvellous (although his nursery doens't recognise some of the signs, so his brother has to translate!). The dvd is OK but going to the classes helps you to be more confident that you know what you're doing.

There is a huge range of signing products available now. I signed with both my children and now have a signing website, have a look at this

babysign · 03/09/2009 14:22

I do apologise for any upset caused, I am new to mums net and was unaware of how it worked. My sincerest apologies x

if you had deleted my post then why have you not reported shally for advertising her class?? as she is premoting her class is this not allowed??

paisleyleaf · 03/09/2009 14:33

I really that the signing really helped my DD with her speech. She was talking pretty early and I think it's because the signing really breaks the language down; like you might say "come on then DD, lets get your coat on because we're going out now". But you'd just sign 'coat' 'out'

I've got BSL certificate because I sign at work sometimes, so I could have taught her myself. But we did have fun at the groups.
I think it's important to just concentrate on one or two signs (important ones to baby 'milk' 'nappy' perhaps) at a time to start with, by using the sign yourself each time.

i only read your post , i had not read the whole thread. if shally has been advertising, then i shall let MNHQ know and it is up to them what gets deleted or not

I sign with my baby she's nearly 20 months and have been doing it for about 3 months now. She has picked it up very quickly showing me the signs for when she's hungry, wants to sleep, food and getting undressed for bed. We are going to try hot and cold next (temperature of food, not the weather).

Dp was a little rolling of the eyes at first but now she communicates with him he thinks it a brilliant idea.

I use makaton

DS had quite a few simple signs and dropped them all when he began to speak. I got a book from Barnes and Noble I believe.

I signed for one of my charges. From about six months I signed a few basic words eg milk, dog, more, water, up, nappy, eat, please, thank you. She was able to sign back to me by 8 months and we added more signs a long the way. She spoke her first words at nine months "what's that". I left just after she starting talking but went and visited her recently, she is now three and speaks really well.

I ordered a BSL dictionary from amazon and picked the words to use.
