Do babies have a particularly good sense of smell then?

People often make reference to what babies can smell.

"He can smell milk, he wants milk!" (Do I smell of milk to everyone then? )

"Put a tshirt of yours in his cot and the smell will comfort him" (unless I actually nuzzle and inhale a worn tshirt, I can't really smell a person on it, can babies?)

Do they have a better sense of smell than adults?

I think so.

My DC as toddlers had an incredible sense of smell.

Indeed they do,their sense of smell is much stronger than us grown ups. All the better to find mummy with

There's people out there who are very curious and they find out these things

YunoYurbubson · 15/07/2010 19:43

Yes, but how? How on earth would you guage how sensitive a baby's sense of smell is?

These people are clever, very clever.

I'm thinking they must have done something like that sweaty husband T-shirt and sniffing women line up test, only with babies and mummies T-shirt.

Not only that I think babies have great hearing bacause my dd could always tell dh's footsteps in the hospital corridor, it was only then that she would finally stop crying.

My nephew could smell a fruit polo I was trying to sneak from a mile off!

Given that my baby used to nuzzle up to (not so savoury) stockinged feet and chew people's toes, my conclusion was that he had no sense of smell or taste whatsoever.

We went to some crazy toddler music group. One week when we went in DS2 was obsessed with the piano, which had a cover over it. At the end of the session the leader got out some chocolates which she'd hidden in the piano, and gave them to the DC (it was Easter or something) - how DS2 knew they were there, I've no idea. He's either psychic, or could smell them.
