What do you think about Olive for a girl?

I am due in two weeks and really torn on girls names! My favourite is 'Olive' and i like 'Liv' as an abbreviation for when they get older, but i have come across so many negative comments about Olive i am doubting it now. Alternatives i have are Amelie and Madeleine, i wouldn't consider Olivia, because although it is a lovely name it's just too popular. Please help!! Thanks!

P.S - (If i go with Olive i think i will use Lily as a middle name).

I only think of On The Buses when I hear the name Olive.

booreeve · 05/07/2010 10:23

Love it....wanted it, but DH hates it!

emmyloo2 · 05/07/2010 10:24

I love love love Olive. I think it is really sweet. I like Olivia as well but like you, I think it is way to popular.

Amelie and Madeleine are nice but a little bit over-used at the moment. I think Olive is much nicer. I also like Iris, which I think is similar sort of name to Olive.

Be brave and use it. I remember a couple I knew a few years ago had a little girl called Olive and I thought what a gorgeous name!

I'm in the south west and only know of one Olivia who is 7 and is my niece (so i couldn't use it despite loving it).
It's funny but i'm not as keen on just Olive but i do like Liv for short. I'm expecting and also liked the names Madeline and Amelie but wasn't keen on Madeline shortened to Maddy/Mads.
Amelie Lily sound quite pretty.
Good luck choosing anyway

I think Olive is a great name. I know one little Olive.

Definitelyy go for that rather than Olivia.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 05/07/2010 10:39

It does make me think of 'On The Buses', which is a shame because it is actually a pretty name.

coffeefestival · 05/07/2010 10:49

I like Olive

ludog · 05/07/2010 11:09

DD's best friend is called Olive. She is the only one I know apart from a cousin of mine who is in her 40s. I love it.

I have an Olivia but for some reason Olive still reminds me of on the buses. Love the middle name Lily, i always wanted a Lily but unfortunately it is my dc's surname.

Hedwig3 · 05/07/2010 11:11

Love it.

DelGirl · 05/07/2010 11:12

What about Lily Olive then? I have the on the buses assocation too

PlasticCenturion · 05/07/2010 11:15

Olive's lovely. That pseudo-offensive comedian and his flame-haired love have an Olive don't they?

KERALA1 · 05/07/2010 11:29

Love it. Classy and translates well to an adult woman. Olivia is way too popular.

LetThereBeRock · 05/07/2010 13:03

Horrid.

Letz · 05/07/2010 13:29

I like it a lot and prefer it to the overused Olivia.

issy123 · 05/07/2010 16:21

I like its lovley a bit quirky and not one of the overused girls names. Also trendy a bit old lady chic.

fleur77 · 05/07/2010 17:22

Thanks everyone for your comments! I have never even heard of On the Buses, i just had to Google it, i asume there was a character in it called Olive or something? Doesn't really bother me as i guess only older generations will associate the name with that.

I think i might be brave and go for it!

yes go for it, it's a lovely lovely name

RabbitAndCo · 07/07/2010 10:18

LOVE IT LOVE IT

Wanted it but DH said no

No idea what on the buses is either so I wouldn't worry about that.

ginnny · 07/07/2010 10:25

No - I think of On The Buses and Popeye!
Olivia is much nicer imo.

Hedwig3 · 07/07/2010 10:42

Be brave!

BridesheadRegardless · 07/07/2010 10:48

Too much like the very popular Olivia, it's like the Eve/Eva/Ava scenario, the distictions become blurred.

Many would presume it was a shortening for Olivia, particuarly if you use 'Liv'.

So, I'd go with Olivia as much prettier, but avoid both if you are concerned about popularity.

Rockbird · 07/07/2010 11:48

Love it. Does remind me of On the Buses but she was a great character so I wouldn't mind that.
