What do you think of these names?

Found out we're having a girl but we're struggling to think of a name we both really like, my mum is coming out with some pretty different ones such as xanthe that wouldn't go with the names of the children; so I'd quite like to have a lovely one ready! Our boy's name was going to be Gabriel which we both really love, and due at Christmas.

so, what do people think of these names?

Carys
Scarlett
Gabriella
Gabriel
Faye
Freya
Joelle
Willow
Maya
Miranda
Meredith
Erin
Sophia
Isla

Or any suggestions? Oh Joelle was on my mum's list but was OK I thought hehe.

I love Isla and if I had another baby and it was a girl, I'd prab choose that. Sophia is nice too and Erin (but erin getting a lot more popular).

Meredith is lovely too.

DramaInPyjamas · 29/06/2010 18:28

I like:

Carys
Scarlett
Gabriella

Prefer Cerys to Carys though.

Congrats btw! x

Carys
Gabriella
Willow
Maya

Wanderingsheep · 29/06/2010 18:40

I love love love Gabriella, Isla and Sophia!

Kathleen123 · 29/06/2010 18:53

Gabriella okay - as it could be shortened to Ella. Personally dont like the name when shortened to Gabby.

Gabriel is a boy's name

JodieO · 29/06/2010 19:01

Thanks, the ones mentioned are our favourites of the list too. Dd really loves Scarlett as do I but I wondered if it was a bit too, can't put my finger on it.

I thought the same about Gabriella, I like it shortened to Ella but not Gabby.

Juliet is lovely too, added that to my list!

What would Willow be shortened to?

Carys - ok
Scarlett - like
Gabriella - ok
Gabriel - ok
Faye - like it better as a middle name
Freya - ok
Joelle - ooh no, dislike this one, sorry
Willow - no
Maya - no
Miranda - love it
Meredith - likeit
Erin - ok
Sophia - don't like it
Isla - ok

My favourite by miles is Miranda.

JodieO · 29/06/2010 19:04

I know said, I think that slipped on the list from the boys name one as that was on the other list I meant to put Gabrielle on this list instead.

Thanks again, what would Miranda be shortened to?

DD1 was nearly Miranda - we would probably have shortened it to Mimi but tbh I think it's best just to see what happens re: shortenings.

I was in the birthing pool by the time I agreed to one of my dds being called 'Isobel' on the understanding that she would be 'Belle' and not 'Izzy' - as soon as she could speak, she INSISTED that she was Izzy and has never once allowed anybody to call her Belle!

LaRagazzaInglese · 29/06/2010 22:49

Freya
Carys/Cerys
Erin
Isla

not:
Maya
Sophia
Willow

Joelle is nice and unusual though, quite cute for a christmas baby, or how about Noelle/Noella?

mathanxiety · 29/06/2010 23:08

Carys -- love this, and also the Greek Charis, pronounced just about the same
Scarlett -- dislike; I always think 'Scarlet Woman' or The Scarlett Letter, so tragic. Scarlet means extreme embarrassment in Dublinese too.
Gabriella -- prefer Gabrielle
Faye -- a bit wispy
Freya -- nice, but very popular. I think I prefer Frida
Joelle -- meh
Willow -- like a lot, suggest Lola as a nn?
Maya -- a bit meh
Miranda -- like a lot
Meredith -- dislike; I think this is a rather harsh name
Erin -- soup
Sophia -- love
Isla -- like a lot

So
Carys or Charis
Gabrielle (Bree, Elle, Ellie as nns)
Willow (maybe Lola as a nn?)
Miranda
Sophia
Isla
and Freya or Frida

I love Noelle for a Christmas baby too, or Holly
Joy
Angelika
Ivy
Josephine
Natalie/Natalia
Estelle/Stella/Seren ('star')
Eira/Neva (meaning 'snow' in Welsh/Spanish)

mathanxiety · 29/06/2010 23:09

Love Juliet too.

Willow would be Lola or Willy!
Miranda would be Miri or Randy!

CheeseandGherkins · 23/07/2010 20:14

I'm really liking Noelle and Isla now, dp has gone off Willow which I really liked but hey. Would have gone lovely with the surname too.
