Miranda, Tabitha, Alexandra...

I know there have been lots of posts on the names Miranda, Tabitha and Alexandra (though not all together in one list) but I'd be interested in some strangers opinions!

Our first baby (little girl obv) is due in October and after the usual long conversations my DH and I had decided on Miranda. However I am now wavering.

We had previously been very keen on Poppy and Scarlett but we felt they are just so popular right now that she would be one of several in every class she joined. (And having gone through that myself I'd rather not subject her to always being identified by having the first letter of her surname tacked on the end at school.) But I digress.

We were both very keen on Tabitha until a close family member said they thought we were naming a child and not a cat... and that she'd always be known as Tabby (very feline of course, and that put us off rather...). The only Tabitha we'd been thinking of was the little girl in Bewitched. Daft as it sounds, although we love Tabitha we aren't keen on Tabby (although I did point out she could be Tab or Tabs) and in the end we relegated Tabitha to the 'love it but we won't go with it' pile.

Anyway, due to my wavering on Miranda we are reconsidering and so Alexandra is back with a chance to be considered along with Miranda, and Tabitha has come back into the conversation too. DH is still most keen on Miranda, but the lack of any obvious nn for it seems to be a negative to me rather than a positive, one nn suggested in the name books was (Randy - not keen on the poor girl being stuck with a nympho nn, or Mandy - which rightly or wrongly doesn't appeal either. Am also concerned Miranda could be seen as a little too 80s. Love the fact Alexandra has so many nn possibilities, though DH is concerned that as nice as the nns are - she will be reliant on them as no one will ever bother to use the full name as 4 syllables is such a mouthful. Gosh - this has gone on longer than expected will sign off and hope for some pearls of wisdom. Essentially I'd like to know what you guys think of when you hear the names Miranda, Tabitha and Alexandra ie what sorts of characteristics/types of people do they conjure up in your mind's eye?

(We like Olivia, but have too many godchildren already called Olivia. I loved Clementine and Jessica too but DH vetoed them on the basis that Jessica is too popular and he doesn't like Clementine (mind you that's fair enough I guess being as I vetoed his suggestion of Skylar on the basis it sounded like a type of Cessna light aircraft (OK so that was a Skylane... but still its pretty close...))

PS This is my first posting on Mumsnet so be kind! Also I apologise for the length of the post, will keep it shorter in future.

My daughter is called Tabitha, which we shorten to Tabi, and a friend refers to her as Bibi. I think it's the most beautiful name in the world, along with Saskia (my other daughter), Anoushka, Darcey, Anastasia and Tatiana. We actually knew someone with a cat called Tabitha when we named her- if it's good enough for a cat, it's good enough for a gorgeous little girlie....yes, we are cat fans! But Clementine? Clammy lemony- snicket Clementine? Don't do it :D Good luck, luv Dominique

I know I'm late to this but I love Tabatha with that spelling. Tabitha just looks wrong to my eyes - but with the repeated 'a' vowel it looks and sounds so much better and more symmetrical for want of a better explanation.

Miranda is lovely, but Tabitha is one of my all time favourite names The only girl I know calls herself Tabby or Tabs.

Kathleen123 · 20/07/2010 21:13

Alexandra my fave
.

pitterpatterfeet · 21/07/2010 18:12

Miranda definitely the nicest IMVHO and classy too!

freerangeeggs · 22/07/2010 17:49

I love all three of them.

Miranda is really unexpected and sophisticated. I love the nickname Miri, or maybe even Mimi.

Tabitha isn't too cat-like at all. What is the association with cats and this name?! Tabby, Tabs, Tibby, Bitsy, Betsy, Bess, Bessie all work as nicknames, though I like some more than others.

Alexandra is probably less interesting than the others but it is beautiful, too.

You're right about Poppy and Scalett being too popular - I have two Scarletts in one class at school!

Beattiebow · 22/07/2010 17:53

I love Miranda and Clementine. I think DH would veto Clementine for me.

I think Mimi or Mim are both lovely nicknames.

I have 2 of the other names you have mentioned already for my dds we obviously have similar taste.

loobylu3 · 22/07/2010 20:41

I'm with Hedwig:

LOVE Miranda

Like Tabitha

Alexandra sounds too manly for me

Clementine is v pretty too.

My favourite is still Miranda- it doesn't sound dated at all- beautiful and Shakespearian. (I think in The States, it might be considered a bit 1980s as it was probably more popular over there)

How about Jemima, Cordelia, Cecilia, Penelope, Juliet or Susanna?

Onlyaphase · 22/07/2010 20:44

I love Tabitha but can't get past the cat connection. What about Talitha instead?

baskingseals · 22/07/2010 20:58

my middle name is Miranda - i love it

dd is Alexandra Sophie Miranda - it is a beautiful name. she's named after my sister and mum.

love all the names. congratulations!

baskingseals · 22/07/2010 21:00

btw she's always Alexandra - you can resist the nns

proudfoot · 22/07/2010 23:16

I would use Alexandra. The other two sound a bit dated whereas Alexandra is classic. I would use Sasha as a nickname - lovely, pretty and more individual than Alex!
