Advice and opinions please. I dont usually like nicknames used as proper names but in considering a name for baby no2 we are thinking about Gus as a full name. DH likes Angus and I thought about Fergus but I dont like them enough and I definatley dont want August/Augustus or Gustav. Can you think of anyother any names Gus could be short for?

Thanks!

Augustus
August
Gustav
Gustin
Gustaver

I think Fergus and Angus are so short and roll off the tongue easily that you wouldn't shorten them.

trice · 16/06/2010 12:08

Why don't you name him James or Victor or something and then just use Gus as a nickname. I wouldn't use just Gus as a "real" name, but then I am old fashioned.

belgo · 16/06/2010 12:09

I know a Gus. Just Gus. The problem is everyone will think it's short for Gustaaf etc.

sophiesmummie · 16/06/2010 12:11

I wouldn't name him just Gus, it sounds 'unfinished' to my ears. I'd assume it was short for Augustus or Gustave.

Hedwig3 · 16/06/2010 12:18

If I heard a child named Gus nowadays I actually would assume that was his whole name.

LynetteScavo · 16/06/2010 12:22

I once knew somone called Gus. I never thought it might me short for something else.

mazzystartled · 16/06/2010 12:23

I think just Gus is fine
I have an Angus (a very new one) so not sure if/ how he will get nicknamed yet.
All (well both) the Fergus's I know get called Feg, so maybe avoid....

DastardlyandSmugly · 16/06/2010 12:24

I know an Angus, called Gus, and a Fergus, called Fergus. I love Gus though.

coffeefestival · 16/06/2010 12:40

Magus
Argus
Augustino
Gustovo
Lugus

GladioliBuckets · 16/06/2010 12:43

When I see/hear the name Gus it makes me think of a name badge on the boilersuit of a snaggletoothed pump attendant in a gas station miles from anywhere in the US Midwest. He might have a body or two stashed in the ice cream chest freezer.
Am I really the only one?

Magalyxyz · 16/06/2010 12:44

I like Fergus, but I don't see why Gus is any 'less' of a name than say John or Max.

Gus on its own is a strong name imo

GladioliBuckets · 16/06/2010 12:49

Whoops, sorry to be rude, was thinking out loud and my fingers typed on autopilot.

minipie · 16/06/2010 13:05

Gladioli

I like the picture. But in my head, he's called Jimmy Ray or Jimmy Bob or something.

mopsyflopsy · 16/06/2010 13:08

GUS is the German abbreviation for the CIS countries (former soviet union).

Gus might be ok as a nickname/full name in Britian, but I don't feel it will travel well into other languages.

Augustus, on the other hand, is a great internationally pronouncable name with lots of nickname potential.

dannap · 16/06/2010 13:29

I think Gus is OK on its own. Camilla PB's daughter has twin sons and one of them is (just) Gus.

Poohbearsmom · 16/06/2010 14:06

I think Gus is nice but much prefer Angus i think thats a great name

LetThereBeRock · 16/06/2010 14:22

I wouldn't use Gus as a full name. I love Angus, not so fond of Fergus.

GladioliBuckets · 16/06/2010 14:30

No Minipie, that's his brother, the one with the chainsaw.

it's terribly cute, but he might want a longer name for when he's a grown-up.

Tidey · 27/06/2010 13:14

Gustopher?

Sorry

Cortina · 27/06/2010 13:27

From memory so might not be completely accurate but:

His name was really 'Asparagus' but that's such a fuss that the family usually called him, 'Just Gus'.

His coat's very shabby, he's thin as a rake and he suffers form palsy which makes his paw shake. Yet he was in his youth quite the smartest of cats but no longer a terror to mice or to rats'.

Kathleen123 · 28/06/2010 14:16

I've met a Gustavus - but everyone called him Tavie.

I love Gus as a name, but also like Angus.

Rockbird · 28/06/2010 14:19

Angus is a great name, I love it
