Starting to think about baby names, not finding out the sex so both to consider. Let me know if there are any you think are awful, or great, or if you can think of any horrid nicknames they'd be faced with! Surname begins with 'L'. Thanks.

Girls

Georgia
Florence (Flo)
Jodie
Maya
Lyra
Sofia

Boys

Benjamin (Ben)
Frederick (Freddie)
Edward (Ted)
George

Dh has just said no to Jodie (bacause of Jodie Marsh) and Freddie (too 'scooby doo' apparently) which were my favourites. He also thinks Lyra is too common because of 'His dark materials', I don't know any Lyras, , this is going to be hard!

Love florence & ted, both have been on my list but don't go with out surname

hairymelons · 06/06/2010 12:50

Oh, lyra is lovely too.

MrsKitty · 06/06/2010 12:55

Not keen on Jodie

Florence could potentially be a bit of a mouthful with a surname starting with L. Obviously depends on surname but it wouldn't go with Lawrence or Lewis for example IMO. I don't mind any of the other girls names, but don't love them. What about Martha, Jennifer, Laura?

Don't like Freddie. Others all good boys names How about James, Michael, Matthew?

hmmSleep · 06/06/2010 13:06

Thanks, hairy, I'm veering towards Ted now.

Mrs Kitty, I think I'm not keen on your suggestions because they're from my era, a lot of old school friends with those names, so although nice they feel a little dated to me. I can't do the 80's fashion trends that come back round for the same reason!

I dislike Lyra - too similar-sounding to Lycra and Liar - and Ben is overdone, but the rest of your choices are all lovely.

comtessa · 06/06/2010 13:15

Do you like George as a nickname for Georgia? Names will inevitably get shortened.

Flo - more of a US or older thing but of course some people refer to periods as "Aunt Flo."

Sofia - unless it's an Eastern European connection you're keen on, maybe spell is Sophia so she doesn't have to put up with incorrect spellings of her name? Also might get pronounced Sof-yah as opposed to So-fee-ya.

It's just a case of your preferences, they're all nice names. Just thought I'd put those thoughts out for you.

xx

SacharissaCripslock · 06/06/2010 13:21

I love Lyra.

FionaSH · 06/06/2010 13:23

I think Freddie is lovely for a boy.

I like all your girls names (but not quite so keen on Jodie probably).

All good names!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 06/06/2010 13:46

Girls

Benjamin (Ben) - like
Frederick (Freddie) - meh
Edward (Ted) - love
George - meh

Poohbearsmom · 06/06/2010 14:18

Georgia - not fond but don't hate it
Florence (Flo) - love Florence but hate Flo
Jodie - okay
Maya - don't like this, sorry
Lyra - love this
Sofia -not fond of this

Boys

Benjamin (Ben) - love this
Frederick (Freddie) - like Frederick but hate Freddie
Edward (Ted) - love this
George - not fond

hmmSleep · 06/06/2010 14:30

Thanks all.

comtessa, quite like George as a nickname for Georgia, and think you might be right about spelling of Sophia.

Jodie seems to be least popular, so might strike that off, especially as dh doesn't like it anyway, guess he is allowed some say .

Agree that Lyra might be too much with 'L' surname. I also have a slight 'r' speech impediment, (think Jonathan Ross but less extreme) so should probably avoid Lyra for this reason too.

Girls

Georgia - prefer Georgina. Not too bad.
Florence (Flo) - dislike the NN Flo - quite like Flossie though! Not a bad name.
Jodie - dislike.
Maya - very sweet name
Lyra - nice name
Sofia - lovely

Boys

Benjamin (Ben) Love, love, love!
Frederick (Freddie) - it's fine.
Edward (Ted) - fine
George - fine.

hmmSleep · 06/06/2010 14:36

Oh, I like flossie, doest remind you too much of dental floss though?

OP posts:
Ineedsomesleep · 06/06/2010 14:37

Love all the Boys names. Might be slightly biased as DS is George.

Girls

Don't like Jodie or Lyra. Like Maya although it is quite popular and Florence.

stressheaderic · 06/06/2010 14:43

Not Jodie. All teenage Jodies are unruly.
Like Maya and George best (see what I did there).

Psammead · 06/06/2010 14:44

Re: dental floss - not really! Reminds me more of candy floss! Which probably ought to lead to dental floss :P

YellowRoseofTexas · 06/06/2010 14:49

Lots of nice names on your list!

Girls

Georgia - really love it - one of my fav girls' names. Reminds me of the artist Georgia O'Keefe.
Florence (Flo) - feel it might be used a lot this year due to Florence and the Machine?
Jodie - boring
Maya - nice. sounds a bit exotic? (in a good way)
Lyra - really nice! unusual yet easy to say and spell.
Sofia - I like it, and its meaning.

Boys

Benjamin (Ben) - love. Sounds masculine yet kind. (not sure why!)
Frederick (Freddie) - oh no, not Freddie...
Edward (Ted) - I like Edward and Ed better than Ted. Ted sounds nerdy to me.
George - yep, love. cute on a boy, nice on a man.

Hedwig3 · 06/06/2010 21:46

I think there are plenty of Edwards in the world now with all the accompanying nicknames!

George is a great, underused name.

Like Frederick too.

bunnygirl80 · 06/06/2010 23:25

I love Lyra, but not sure about how it would sound with an L surname.

I also really like Georgia and Maya. I'm realy not keen on Jodie.

Definitely not a fan of Freddie - it's cute on little boys but I don't think it suits anyone over the age of 5, but if they revert to Fred or Frederick they're stuck with an old man's name

The other boys names are all nice - Benjamin is my favourite- it's on the list for my bump.

TotallyWipedout · 06/06/2010 23:28

I don't love any of them - though I like them all perfectly well, with the sole exception of Jodie, which I really, really dislike.

bibbitybobbityhat · 06/06/2010 23:30

I like all of the boys names, especially Edward and George.

Of the girls names, I particularly like Florence and Lyra.

Don't like Maya at all.

mathanxiety · 07/06/2010 02:36

Just Sofia and Benjamin -- I love Lyra, though, and wonder if your DH could have his arm twisted.
