Anyone got any ideas on more unusual/rare names.

The names we had picked out turned out to be a lot more common than I thought.

Dd2 is Saffron (the only one at nursery and school).

Dd1's name is more common.

ticktockclock · 04/06/2010 18:09

I like Saffron it was one of my choices but DH nixed it at every opportunity

Another vote for Effie for a girl!
Love it and i have never met one in rl.
Its not weird at all, its unusual enough but not so much so that you would get any raised eyebrows!
Dastardly you have very good taste!

Isn't there a risk that Effie might become more popular now due to Skins (might though mightn't be popular enough - though it was hte first thing i thought about and I don't even watch it)

It's a bit of a pain when an unusal name appears in a tv programme or film!!

I recall when DS1 was born he had an unusual name and I was watching a soap with MIL adn a young character got arrested and had to give him full name both the first and middle name the the exact smae as DS1's

Ds2's name is right up there in the popular stakes though

MamaLazarou · 04/06/2010 20:36

How about Ingram for a boy and Marianne for a girl.

DastardlyandSmugly · 04/06/2010 20:50

I met two in rl when I was pregnant and we'd already decided what we were calling her. They were older ladies. Did anyone watch the thing about the pre-raphaelites too - John Ruskin's wife was called Effie. Still love it though and only one person has ever mentioned the Skins connection.

shoshe · 04/06/2010 20:51

A friend has just called her baby born Tuesday Jago, another friend, newborn born Thursday called hers Jemima neither that common, but neither that abstract.

LaRagazzaInglese · 05/06/2010 11:56

I've always liked Effie since I watched Heartbeak High!

Cortina · 05/06/2010 14:04

Carine - as in the French Carine Roitfeld editor of Vogue. I've always loved this name. Also (some more common but not widely used at the moment):

Julia
India
Helen
Jessamy
Samantha
Natalie
Leonora
Beatrice/Beatrix (well maybe that one is a bit more popular)
Annabella/Anabella

ballstoit · 05/06/2010 15:05

Friends of friends have recently called their baby Effie. There was much amusement from my DH and the other males we know. Apparently the similarity to effing was too much for them all .

candyflossbaby · 05/06/2010 20:33

I have not heard of Jessamy before?

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have copied loads down!!

Asa for a boy.

LuluF · 07/06/2010 07:24

If you like Jessamy, there is also a slightly different version - Jessamine which I think is also pretty.

rhinoankles · 07/06/2010 07:36

Sherwin for a boy?

candyflossbaby · 07/06/2010 13:29

Thanks luluF

My DD is Orlena - it's an old French name meaning Golden. I know I'm biased, but I love it! We always get nice comments about it - it's unusual but not weird. Good luck!
