What do we think of Nathaniel? Will people end up calling him Nat or can I steer them towards Nate if they insist on abbreviating?

Other options are

Alexander (nn Alex)
Sebastian (NOT to be abbreviated)
Edmund
Isaac

We'd like a Welsh middle name - current favourites are Owain, Llewelyn or Dylan.

Surname begins with R and DS1 is called Theo.

All opinions gratefully received!

I love Nathaniel Also fond of Edmund and Sebastian. Nathaniel is my favourite, though.

Welsh middle name - Bryn is fantastic

lidofabiro · 02/06/2010 11:49

Nathaniel is very nice. I think people would follow your lead with Nate as a nickname.

I like all your other suggestions too! I think people would often try to abbreviate Sebastian to Seb, though.

My favourite combinations would be

Nathaniel Dylan R....
Alexander Llewelyn R......
Alexander Dylan R.....
Edmund Owain R....
Edmund Llewellyn R....

Not Alexander Owain because it's awkward to say, and not Edmund Dylan because the Ds run together, not Nathaniel Llewelyn because the Ls run together.

Isaac would go with any of the middle names IMO.

i love nathaniel and also nate as a nn and a stand alone name! Great taste!

NorkyButNice · 02/06/2010 12:51

Wow I'm surprised (and pleased!) at the response!

I do love Nathaniel but DH prefers Alex. We'll have to see what he looks like if he turns out to be a boy!

ooh, I love Nathaniel - 39 weeks with DC2 and if it's a boy our names are Nathaniel James or Dylan James, depending on which suits him best. I think Nate is a great NN.

I would also have considered Alexander, but a close friend already has one. Nathaniel is definitely a bit more original though. You have good taste in names!

loobylu3 · 02/06/2010 15:01

I love Nathaniel!

I also like Edmund and Sebastian.

HelenFF · 02/06/2010 16:26

Well we're probably having a Nathan (can be shortened to Nate) Alexander so I like your options!

Chynah · 02/06/2010 20:17

DS is Nathaniel nn Nate - love it!

Anyone who names their child something with the proviso 'NOT to be abbreviated' should be prepared for being the ONLY people left referring to their child by their full name, 10 years down the line. My parents found this out to their cost

NorkyButNice · 04/06/2010 14:13

Very true libelulle!

I think Sebastian has been discounted because of this - I just don't like Seb and there aren't really any other abbreviations I could steer people towards!

I love all your choices but if you don't like Seb I wouldn't go for Sebastian.

I love Nathaniel, know a little one who is known as Nate. Great name.
