Nikita for boys name?

Nikita is a common boy's name in eastern europe, but it is considered a girls name in western countries.

I like it for a boy a lot but my hubby says it is a girls name.
What do you guys think?

Nikita is a nickname in Russia & Eastern Europe, isn't it? So you could name your boy Nicholas and still call him Nikita.

Let your hubby in on the secret that Elton John is gay and that is why he wrote a love song for "Nikita".

Girl's name, sorry.

hm, I never though that you can call the baby Nicholas and nickname Nikita, but its a great combo. In eastern europe Nikita is usually a separate name. My hubby did suggest Nicholas instead for a boy name, so may be if we end up having a boy we will call him Nicholas and nickname Nikita
I did think of the Khurushchev association but I think it is not a problem for me, the babies generation will probably not know who that is most likely... but if I am feeling strong about the name I will have to probably pass it by my parents, becuase they will most totally know who that is

I think of Nikita as a girls' name.

I agree Nicholas would be a good choice.

Naming a boy Nicholas and then using Nikita as a nickname seems strange to me -- aside from them being separate names, which most people in the West might not know, you would be using a nickname that's not shorter than the "real" name and is also more unfamiliar to people. I mean, naming a boy Nikita and calling him Nick would make sense because it's shorter and easier.

Naming him Nicholas and calling him Nikita is a bit like naming him Edward but calling him Edmund for short.

They're both good names, though, and Nick is a nice short form for either.
