I like it but wonder if it might be a bit much?

I like it. Likely nickname is Jules.

pitterpatterfeet · 29/05/2010 20:56

yes

Cadelaide · 29/05/2010 20:57

I have a Julius.

And I am as pretentious as the most pretentious thing you can thing of.

It's a fantastic name.

SaorAlba · 29/05/2010 21:33

Caesar is what I think of.

A1980 · 29/05/2010 22:16

I'd go for Julian. It sounds nicer.

Jules is a pretty cool name for a boy.

Cadelaide · 29/05/2010 22:28

Don't listen to any of them, they know nothing.

of course he won't get called "Julie". Well, no more than if he were Julian.

Do it, you know you want to.

I don't get the whole 'pretentious' 'trying hard'issue. Don't all parents try very hard to find a lovely name for their child, ideally one that is not already used by 1000s of other children, and one that sounds nice and goes well with their surname.

I like it.

It is quite popular in Germany at the moment I think.

rachel234 · 30/05/2010 13:07

"people occasionally choose a name that they don't actually like just to show how not run of the mill they are"

You are joking, right?

annasophia · 30/05/2010 13:22

I like Julius. Indeed reasonably popular in Germany (pronounced You-li-uss). In fact, lots of lovely names that many (British)mumsnetters would probably find 'posh' or 'pretentious' are much more used in other countries.

Like the prvevious poster, I also struggle with some (British?) mumsnetters' worry about 'trying too hard' or coming across as 'pretentious'. Isn't it normal to want the nicest possible name for your child, one that you love and that is not already used by hundreds others?

boodleboot · 30/05/2010 13:30

i think it is fabulous.....prefer Jules as in Jules Verne but just cannot get DH to go for it....

halfawake · 30/05/2010 14:25

Thanks for the opinions

Lindt and AnnaSophia, I am German-speaking (Austria) and here nobody would be too surprised about Julius, but I'm considering about reactions in England (will be moving in a couple of years!)

Ah, that's more like it, now the thread is turning

LetThereBeRock · 30/05/2010 19:54

I prefer Julian but I do like it,even if it makes think of Caesar and the drink.

MamaLazarou · 31/05/2010 11:22

Not pretentious at all. It is a wonderful name.

Personally, I would rather be considered 'pretentious' (who really gives a shit?) than just play safe in order to blend in with the crowd.
