too much of a mouthful

thisisyesterday · 26/05/2010 16:30

hmm i think it depends how many syllables

i think if the surname has more syllables than Ailish it would sound ok

namehelpneeded · 26/05/2010 16:34

So imagine Ailish Morris - its too much of a mouthful isnt it

Not sure it goes together as well as it could, although Ailish is a lovely name.

How about similar names such as Alicia, Aisling, Alyssa or Ailsa?

namehelpneeded · 26/05/2010 17:54

I dont like Ailsa and we want it to be a Scottish / Gaelic name. It is the only girls name dh and I agree on - arghhhhhh!

hmm actually, I think that sounds ok! when i was imagining it earlier i was using "bayliss" as my example name, which sounds wrong!

Haliborange · 26/05/2010 18:09

It's fine. Ailish Bayliss would be too much because of the repeating 'a' sound, not because of the iss bit.

StiffUpperHip · 26/05/2010 18:12

Why not Eilidh then? Or would 2 names work, but you could call by the first mainly, only using 2 when surname involved. I'm thinking something like Ailish Anne or Ailish Kate (or Ceit if you want Gaelic spelling). That would be more Highland anyway as 2 names way more common.

(I'm mother of a Mar saili, an Els peth and a Flo ra if that's any help).

thisisyesterday · 26/05/2010 18:26

it makes me want to say Ailish Baylish

namehelpneeded · 26/05/2010 18:35

Thanks guys.

I really do love Ailish.

Elspeth is actually my fave name of all time but it has been vetoed

Els peth is cool, isn't it?

FWIW, I think something like Ailish Wall ace/Morris/Harr is/Lew is would be fine. Just not so keen if Ailish Bay lis.

namehelpneeded · 26/05/2010 19:24

Thanks. Last name is none of the above and not like bayliss!!

I truly love Elspeth / Elsie but I have worked and worked and worked at dh to no avail, he thinks it is old fashioned. I love it though, I may cry and see if that works !!

We shorten to Elspie. If that helps your arguments at all. Have you tried him with Euphemia/Effie (Oighrig in Gaelic?)...

sapell3 · 26/05/2010 20:22

How about Elisabeth with Elsie for short?
