Scottish names

Hi All, Can anyone help? I am quite fussy with names and really only like Scottish/Gaelic type names but looking for something a little unusual and not well used.

For boys I quite like Cameron, Lewis, Kerr,
Murray

For girls I really like Ailish (husband not
keen. Also like Shona.

Any suggestions? Thanks

but not really fond of any of the girls....

If you are looking for Scottish Gaelic names then Mairi is spelled as MAIRI definitely NOT MHAIRI (I'm not sure but I think that's the Irish spelling?), also Hamish is NOT a name, it's a nickname for when you're talking about someone called James and you'd call them Hamish (weird I know). Roary, Ruairi etc. are NOT spelled that way and are only spelled Ruaridh or Ruairidh...sorry, had to get that off my chest. Some absolutely lovely names suggested though!

I'm not a Gael, but I thought that the Gaelic version of Mary is Mairi. Then if you are talking TO Mairi (i.e. in the vocative tense) you add an 'h' and it becomes Mhairi and the sound changes from 'm' to 'v'. So it's not to do with being Irish. Weegiemum will know better.

Hamish is a name. It is the Gaelic for James, not a nickname. As Iain is John, and Mairi is Mary etc.

For a girl, I love Ailish and he isn't keen on the Ish sound at the end. He likes Eilidh, which I also like, jus doesn't grab me as being the one.

Ay-Lee, Lulu. Prickly, I think you're reight re Mairi/Mhari - asked MIL about this once (native Gaelic speaker). So if you're calling someone's name it's "Mhari!" pron Vari, but you'd say "I'm Mairi" or "This is Mairi". That said, it's all well and good in a language like Gaelic which does have a vocative case, but is just confusing in English, so the easiest thing to do is pick one and stick to it.

My favourite gaelic girls' name is Marsaili (rhymes with parsley) - gorgeous.

And for a girl, Mairead. Various pronunciations, but where I'm from on the north coast of mainland Scotland, we say 'My-rid'. Beautiful.
Mirren - Muireann - is also gorgeous for a girl.

alex - i love the name Mairead - knew a girl with that name, she pronounced it ma-rade. She was a lovely girl too.

there are some brilliant Scottish names. Sadly a lot of what has been said previously I dont like.

Cameron & Lewis are both v popular round our way. Like Kerr v much though. And Shona.
