i have always loved this name but no one in my family likes it. what do you think of it?

Shula and Sula are related names if that's any good?

Or how about Aurelia, Cecelia, Cordelia, Isla, Lucia, Louisa, Serena or Estella?

It makes me think of Ursula from 'The Rainbow' by DH Lawrence - the two sisters are called Gudrun and Ursula. I like it

What sort of names do you like in general? Are there any other particular favourites?

I LOVE the name Ursula and it's definitely in the running for my DC1 due in December. Both me and DH were nicknamed 'bear' as children, so it seems very appropriate.

I love Ursula and it was top of my girls names list - until yesterday that is when I found out I am having a boy instead!!!

It's a really ugly name imo... And it's the big fat meanie from The Little Mermaid.. It would be the same as naming a child Cruella!

Except that Cruella obviously means cruel whereas Ursula means 'little bear' and just happens to be associated with a lame Disney character - you see the difference?

sapell3 - I like Amelie, Amelia, Marissa and Ursula. My niece is called Anaia and I love that.

Problem is OH's surname begins with an O so names ending in A dont really go.

Ursula is high on list for potential (as yet unconceived) DD as it's a family name.

I like it a lot - have been amused that I thought I was almost unique in having it on a shortlist in the UK but it seems on MN at least to be a name of the moment. It seems very much an adult's name though - but I assume that isn't really a problem as no doubt people find some sort of 'younger' nickname for their babies, even if apparently unrelated. (Oh and now see above 'sula' which is quite sweet as a shortening.) Won't use it though as DH doesn't like it. It is a name that seems to generate strong feelings, certainly!

The crappy Disney argument is such a lame one. It's a beautiful, strong name. Who seriously gives a fig about The Little Mermaid?

My other favourite U name is Uma. I can't decide if there is only one though (as in Uma Thurman), but it's tempting to yell out that it needs to be reclaimed.

Ursula does seem to be a Marmite name - I love it, it topped my list of girl names, until I made the mistake of telling my BiL who promptly made chokey noises. If I were to have a girl now (had the other flavour, so issue was moot) I would go for it, and to hell with anyone else's views! (Apart from DH. He still counts.) Never saw The Little Mermaid but I do think it a tad daft to be put off any name you adore because of who else had it. I also loved Imogen, that was second on my list.
